Nationwide strike - buses, rickshaws likely to stay off roads on Feb 20, 21

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore/Udupi (VM)

Mangalor/Udupi, Feb 19: In the wake of nationwide strike called by all the major central trade unions on February 20 and 21, movement of auto rickshaw and buses is expected to come to a halt in the city.

But the Canara bus owners association and Udupi city bus owners association have not extended their support to the strike.

The All India transport workers federation which includes major trade unions have asked owners to stop plying their buses, trucks, car and other vehicles on these two days said Vasanth Achary, CITU chief secretary.

The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh will also extend the support for the strick said state president Ramakrishna Poonja. Ramesh Shetty, vice president of Karavali Bus Naukara Sangha (KBNS) assured their support to all the strikes supported by BMS.

We do not want protest, say bus owners

In connection to the general strike called for rise in price of essential commodities, the Canara bus owners association have clearly that they are not part of the strike.

During the two days of strike, there are many festive occasions and weddings and hence people’s problem will be worsened if protest is organized in these two days. Hence the labour organizations should understand this, said the bus owners association adding that the buses will run as usual on both the days.

Statement by Auto rickshaw drivers association

The federation of Karnataka auto drivers (CITU) will support the strike said Federation district president Sunil Kumar Bajal and LT Suvarna, chief secretary. Dasamsa Udupi district chief convener Jayan Malpe and Sunder Kapettu have also assured their support.

Support from bank associations

The strike called by major central trade unions placing 10 demands before the government of Feb 20 and 21, the district united forum of bank associations have also assured their support, stated a press release.

Around 25,000 bank employees in the district will take part in the protest and they have asked people to do their important transactions before February 20 to avoid problems.

A new law need to be passed. In the event of strikes or bundhs salaries / wages of that day must be deducted including those of ministers, MPs, bureaucrats and leaders so that the pinch of strike must be genuinely felt by all.

Bus owners do not want to lose money - that is why they are not cooperating. Putting on a sad face of empathizing with people. Since when do bus owners have become so responsible? This is something strange.

Guys there is no choice but to live with strike which we cannot avoid at any cost. The fact is India is a republic where people have every choice to elect their own representative and rebel against. It is sad to note that still there is bandh and no way to work for the poor and they have to struggle hard to earn their living and still remain hungry.

Good and bold move by bus association looking at their justification to avoid trouble for people during festive season.
Govt. will not change for good.
No support to Anna but all will support Bharath bandhs.
All political leaders/parties will be happy as they do not loose anything but people have to pay more tax in addition to suffering.

During the peak period of school programs and wedding functions, such strike is uncalled for. The strike will not serve the real purpose instead such mindless strike by transport and other organisation will cripple the day to day life and it will cause hardship in case of medical emergency.
Hence forth, the public should oppose such mindless bundhs by the arm-twisting cartels of different unions and should take action against such organisations. The best way to create awareness is by productive protest, i.e. wear a black band on the arm and do social work in the community after the working hours.

Being very flexible people, we enjoy both the situations,
Situation 1: Without any transport facility, with no vehicles on roads.
Situation 2: With increased and multiplied number of vehicles, along with their drawbacks.

We have revolutionized, sky high and hi-fi technology, dynamic, cheaper, faster and comfortable. Let the land transport suffer long term evolution with expensive and exhausting fuel, dangerous pollutions, traffic jams, increase production, running and maintenance cost, parking space problems, road blocks. Crabs like to remain in the basket, altogether.

Two day strike will result in huge economic loss to the country.

In my view, the reason for strike is trivial. Because, the inflation is so high and so is the price rise in every country of the globe. I would say we are still better in our nation comparing to countries around us.

The strike is meaningless and inconvenience to the general public as well.

It is true that all the commodity prices risen and survival of general public becoming tougher and tougher. It is Governments failure to control prices of general commodities. BJP of karnataka recently supported price hike of Nandini milk and restaurants have raised the price of a cup of tea from Rs10 to Rs.12. Land prices are gone up so much that it is a distance dream of common person to buy a land and build a house. So, something has to be done to control all this mess. Least we can do is the STRIKE.
