Mangalore, Feb 19: Tulunada Rakshana Vedike with the support of hundreds of auto rickshaw drivers from rural areas on Tuesday February 19 staged a massive protest near the DC's office here, demanding grant of licence to ferry passengers from rural areas to the city.

Addressing the protestors, Tulunada Rakshana Vedike founder president Yogish Shetty Jeppu said the administration should grant permission to rural auto drivers to carry passengers from Thokkottu, Ullal, Deralakatte, Someshwar, Kotekar, Kuthar, Konaje to the city.

"All these places are within the limits of 10-km distance, hence the administration should allow us to enter the city," he said.

"People of rural areas are dependent on the city, as there are many colleges, district centers, schools and hospitals in the heart of the city. We have been fighting for the cause for the past 8 years, hence the organization demands that this problem be sorted out very soon," he added.

Speaking to daijiworld, Krishna Shetty Pilar, working president of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike said, “Today 400 auto rickshaw drivers have kept aside their work and attended this protest to demand justice. Rural rickshaws are not allowed to enter the city. If the rural rickshaws do come to the city for legitimate reasons like taking patients to hospitals, the rickshaw drivers are booked by police. We are fighting from many years but our demand has not been fulfilled. If this continues we will intensify our struggle," he warned.

Hamid Hassan Madoor, Krishna Gatti Someshwara, Farook Kinya, Salaluddin Ayub and many others were present.

Prior to the protest, a rally of over 400 auto rickshaws from Thokkottu, Ullal, Kotekar and other places was taken from Thokkottu to State Bank.

Most people have complaints against auto drivers. Whatever the criticism people make against them we should remember one fact that they are the ones who most of the time rush an accident victim to the hospital. We should always remember this and appreciate them.

Totally agree with your comments Bhandarkar Sir! Upon arriving at Central Railway Station at 11:00 PM one night three years back atleast 10 auto drivers refused to take us - a family with two daughters - to Valencia! Made us feel we live in a remote forest area!!

Dear auto drivers first thing you have to learn how to behave with the passengers and also fix meeters then if any one comes in your auto do not over charge them dear auto union leaders you must explain to the drivers not only protest and hiking the rates think every passenger is your brother and sister and you are getting your daily bread from each passenger just keep this in mind

Mangluru rickshaws are notorious for a don't care and brazen attitude! They are also very abusive when their demands are not fulfilled. So much for the hype and hoopla created as compared with those from metros like Mumbai!!!

As far as my experience all drivers who i met always try to loot us by charging extra if v ask them to us till our door step, after all we go in rick to go till our door step else we would have buses to us till bus stop. Over that most of them are ive abt the destinations many reject to go when we ask them to places which is the opposite to their homes. now y thy are asking licnce. Mlore roads are already crowded by these auto & non follow traffic rules either thy just take a turn without giving signals too

Wanted an Auto to some of my relatives who had come for Car -Festival, to the Railway Station yesterday at 8 p.m. One looked at his watch and shrugged off and other enquired whether it was Kankanady Or Central Railway Station before motoring off!
As long as Auto drivers stick to their task of Hiring and ping
customers(their duty) and being honest one does not have any problem! But the 'nakhras' and 'rash behaviour' of some has brought a bad name for the entire lot! There are exceptions no doubt but few and far in between.....
