Mangalore/Kundapur: Nationwide strike hits normal life as buses stay off road

Mangalore, Feb 20: In response to the call for nationwide strike given by trade unions, the city came to a halt on Wednesday February 20, with most people choosing to remain indoors.

Bus services, including KSRTC, came to a complete standstill, causing much incovenience to people, especially office goers and students.

However, those auto rickshaws too were expected to stay off the roads, most of them chose not to support the bandh and plied as usual. As bus services were unavailable, auto rickshaws made merry.

Schools and colleges remained shut, except those where exams are going on.

Most of the shops and business establishments kept their shutters down.

A protest by trade unions against the UPA goverment over high inflation, fuel price hike and violations of labour laws is scheduled to be held later.

Kundapur, Feb 20: In Kundapur the strike began early in the morning, with members from various trade unions descending on streets.

Around 350 people gathered near Shastri Circle and stopped all vehicles plying in the area. Several lorries and trucks were forcibly stopped on the road.

Complete police security has been provided.

The strike evoked good response overall. Both private and government buses chose to stay off the roads.

I totally agree with Mr. Thomas Andrade, Valencia / Toronto.
The oil prices keep changing frequently.I work in a VLCC.
If anyone wants to go on a strike, go against big player like Reliance Petroleum.
They have the world's biggest refinery at Sikka, Gujarath. They are the ones who dictate the oil price.
The clout of Reliance is more than the UPA/ Indian Government.
I know this since I work for an oil industry.

This is nothing but misuse of democracy. We are stupid to blame the Congress Govt. for hike in fuel price, which changes on day to day basis at international level. Whichever party rules the country, the price hike is inevitable. When BJP was in power for a short period, there was too rise in gas price. Communist parties who are backbone of trade unions, were in power in only in West Bengal and Kerala and they have no experience in ruling India. So they play their dirty games with an excuse of price hike. We know how developed the two States they were in power. Without Gulf-income and tourism, Kerala would have been a big zero. Same applies to West Bengal too, which too is par below than other developed States in India despite the rule of communist govt. for more than 25 years.
China is a country with highest population and is ruled by only the Communist Govt. Unlike India, there are no strikes, no rallies, no dirty politics from opposition parties there. This is one of the main reasons they are far advanced than India. Our Communist Parties should take a leaf from Chinese book. The Opposition parties call for strike as and when they wish, without realizing its outcome on the nation and its citizens. Their purpose is not to save the common man but to save themselves.

Misuse of democracy in india ?

When i am 6 years old i am taking food to my father who is working in tale factory near jeppu it is very good factory and labours also very happy.

once these communist govt joined in factory this company is totally collapsed. all labours without work in many years. ( company closed for ever)

    these groups like virus.

this is our duty (public) stop these virus as soon as possible.

if public is not happy with rules and law. then they have to sit with govt. and sort out issue.

these strikes are not for public benefit this is for publicity for 2014 election.

wake up public we indian must work for India not for party.

S.C. must collect total loose from above union.

Govt. should bring new law - if any party calls for Strikes and bandhs.

they have to keep deposit hundred crores.

Ban all the Unions, arrest all the union leaders who have called for this bandh, don't release them until all the losses are recovered from them or don't legalise the unions until they make good the loss.
Then only these bandhs called in the national interest which harm it than further it would stop.
These hartals or bandhs are contempt of courts including Supreme Court.
The Parliament which has our representatives should be the forum for discussion & formulation of policy, rather than closing down(crippling) economy of a nation.
Protest all year round without disrupting the livelihood of poor.
Rights without Responsibilities is not Democracy or Freedom which our Nation needs.

It is our fundamental right to protest. Any political party have right to call for bandh. It is not correct to force it on common people. Let the people participate if they are willing. Forcefully closing shops, pelting stones on vehicles, blocking road etc is rowdism. This should be stopped and dealt severely.

Mr Dinesh Poojary, I would appreciate if you restrained yourself from using the term "Your Congi" I am nor congi or bjp or bsp or sp or jd or aam admi ka party. Secondly, my comments are not from any political views. My views are that all politicians are corrupt, not just Congress or BJP. And my views are to say that these fat people dont understand the pain caused to people like and me during a bandh and hence they will not react to bandh. My views are to say bandh is not the solution but yes we have to find a better way to voice our concerns. Because bandh hurts the economy.

Now lets talk about price hike. The oil we import fluctuates as per the global market. So irrespective of the congress or bjp govt, every govt is inclined to hike prices when international price go up. So naturally when oil prices go high, every other commodity get affected and they also start costing more. And when there is a bandh, I am sure you realise the losses incurred to the country that belongs to you and me and not the fat ugly politicians. So please remember before you and me are bjp and congress or jd or sp or bsp or kjp or aam admi party, we both are Indians and bundhs hurt both you and me.

Protest against price rise, Yes, People should protest!
Because poor people are VERY badly affected! It is Steep rise!
Strikes, NO, because DAILY WAGE earning poor are WORST affected!
    National loss HUGE!
Whether strike will bring down prices?
    Wait and see the results!
Purpose of strike by political parties:
Is to show concern to poor on price raise, but mainly to draw Political mileage!
If the strikers are themselves corrupt then it is utter HYPOCRISY!

To all my dear brothers and sisters of India, please think...if we assume a bandh will make any difference to us, yes it will but negatively. What are we trying to prove? Are we aware that all the bandhs in the past have not made any positive difference, but has hurt our pockets itself. We end up shelling out a lot of money in terms of travelling to and fro to office that day. If we dont go, we lose our salaries. Lakhs and lakhs of people living on daily wages. What about them? Is this bandh doing any justice to them? NO! Today I came to the office in a auto and the driver charged me more than double. But then he made a point. He will run till someone stops him and asks him to go home. And thats why he is charging more. Lets forget ethics for now. Lets talk about if he didnt charge more, who would feed his family or cover his losses?
So end of the day, UPA or NDA, all are corrupt. UPA blame NDA & NDA blame UPA. But this bundh will never affect thier pockets. They drive around in govt vehicles, paid by you and me. So people, I am in the office and I dont support the bundh. If the same people who called for a bandh for price hike, will understand for once that such bundhs are also one of the factors for such price hikes.

I met an auto driver today morning. He is aware that economy will hit approx Rs. 20000 crores due to this strike. He is worried about his Rs. 500 net earnings a day without which he cannot feed his family of 3 children. He is aware that whatever steps Government takes are for good. But he is very sad that crores of rupees goes in the hands of corrupt politicians and our system detects it only after the incident. According to him price rise is mainly corrupt system and middle men.
