Prabhakaran's son's killing 'war crime', says Jayalalithaa

Chennai, Feb 20 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Wednesday described as "a war crime" the alleged cold-blooded killing of the son of the late Tamil Tigers' chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.

"The killing of Balachandran (Prabhakaran) is a war crime," the chief minister told the media here, and urged India to work with the US to pass a resolution in the UN denouncing rights violations in Sri Lanka.

Jayalalithaa spoke a day after a section the media carried photographs of 12-year-old son Balachandran seated in a Sri Lankan military bunker just before he was killed allegedly at close range.

The pictures are part of a film, "No Fire Zone", which seeks to document the widespread rights abuses during the final phase of Sri Lanka's war when the military crushed the Tamil Tigers in May 2009.

Sri Lanka has denied that Prabhakaran's son was killed in cold blood, and maintained that he died in crossfire with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The chief minister said the young boy's killing was "unforgivable".

"I call upon the Indian government to hold discussions with the US and other like-minded nations and prepare a resolution to be passed by the UN (against Sri Lanka)," she said.

She added that in line with a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly, India should impose an economic embargo on Sri Lanka "with the cooperation of other countries".

The embargo should remain in place "until the Tamils who have been displaced there and confined in camps (after the conflict) are allowed to return to their homes and live with equal rights on par with" members of the majority Sinhalese community and "live a life of dignity".

    It is rather unforunate that Prabhakaran's son got killed. The same thing happend to Saddam's sons. Obviously when terrorists being targeted, innocent guys get killed. Any how Tamil Nadu assembly has no jurisdiction in this case and it is better if they mind their own business.

    You are right, There is treaty according to Geneva convention, which calls for how the War captives should be treated!
    War & Captives of war are totally different.
    By killing the young Boy, Sri. Lanka Govt. has blatantly dis-honored that accord!

    Mr.M.S.Sheik..It is NOT according to me..but according to Soldier..I saw the clip yesterday on news channel.In one pic,poor boy was having snack and in another,he was lying on the floor with bullet makrs..Sinhalese soldeirs planned to eliminate everyone before the attack..and they did it without hesitation..

    I refute your comment. There is a Geneva convention which calls for how War captives should be treated. It doesn't allow brutal killing of war captives. In this case the innocent child should have been treated per the war rules. The act of Sinhalese forces is shameful and barbaric.

    Let us not stand for something which is ethically not correct.

    While this should be condemned, similar barbaric acts were inflicted during Gujarat riots 2002. The Hindutva forces of Modi slit the pregnant women with Trident and their womb was pulled out. Ammaji at that time did not protest when such heinous barbarism was going in our own backyard.

    If it is true, agree with Madam. But as Mr.Alwin said, USA(UN security counsel)are the forefathers of war crime mongers. there no accountability for them. Who will consider Madam's war crime plea? and also Madam should refrain softening where as other Indians across India have no mercy whatsoever either against terrorists nor his families.

    For India or any country for that matter, it is important to have good bilateral trade relations with its neighbors including Srilanka, regardless of its size and demographics. Knowing LTTE's history, suicide bombings, waging war in your own country (with Sinhalese people) for an ethnic cause itself shows that they were on the wrong side and no civilized nation will support their cause. They even recruited women and children as militants. It is strange that a state like tamilnadu is dictating terms with India's neighbor thereby projecting India's foreign policy as a pro-terrorist one. Hundreds of children are killed in India due to malnutrition, slavery, lack of medical facilities etc. so neither tamilandu nor any other state have any moral right to claim human rights with its neighbors. Leave it to the centre to decide on these matters.

    True Jayalalitha Madam,
    Very Sad the Child was killed in cold blood in revenge for his father.
    Prabhakaran also killed so many Tamils, elders, women & Children even in his pursuit to freedom. That was also very Sad!
    Our Former P.M. also was killed for meddling in Tamil, Sri Lanka conflict!
    Indira Gandhi had to face bullets for fighting Khalistan movements within India.
    Sikhs riots following her assassination also so deplorable!
    So Ammaji, please don't rub the wounds now!
