Will be in office for full term: Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 20 (IANS): A day after the opposition Left reportedly threatened to pull it down, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Wednesday said the Congress-led government in Kerala will be in office for its full term.

"Almost two years back when we assumed office, they (Left) said that this government with just a two-seat majority will fall soon. In democracy, a majority is required," Chandy told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting.

Chandy leads the United Democratic Front government. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in a meeting Tuesday reportedly threatened to pull down the Congress-led government.

"Since we assumed office we won two by-elections. We are working for the people and our only request to the Left opposition is that we do not need their support in running the government but we need their help ... to formulate and see that development projects gets going," said Chandy.

In the 140-member Kerala assembly, the Congress-led front won 72 seats, while the Left secured 68 seats in the 2011 polls.

But after the Piravom assembly by-election, 2012 they retained their seat, while in the Neyyattinkara by-election, they managed to get the sitting Communist Party of India-Marxist legislator to resign and allowed him to contest on a Congress ticket which he won.

Now the effective strength of Congress-led UDF in the assembly is 73 and that of the LDF is 67.

"They are dreaming that we will crumble but we wish to point out that we are united and will go on to complete the full term," said Chandy.
