Bantwal: Man kills mother in drunken stupor, wife hands him over to police

Mounesh Vishwakarma
Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal

Bantwal, Feb 21: In a startling incident that brought to forth the ill-effects of alcoholism, a man in a drunken stupor killed his aged mother on the night of Tuesday February 19. The incident took place at Padnoor in Vittal here.

The deceased has been identified as Sankamma (75), mother of the accused Dombaiyya Poojary (51), a resident of Pilinja near Kudandka, Padnoor.

It is said that Dombaiyya was in the habit of coming home drunk and torturing his mother mentally and physically. He used to lose his temper over trivial matters and take his aged mother to task for not earning her living.

On Tuesday night too he came home drunk and picked a quarrel with Sankamma. In a fit of rage, he is said to have attacked her with a sharp wooden object. When his wife Lalita and two children tried to intervene, he chased them away with a threat.

Frightened, Lalita and the children spent the night outside in the open, and when they returned home in the morning, they found Sankamma's body on the verandah. Wanting to hide the crime from public eye, Dombaiyya told her not to reveal it to anybody, and shifted the corpse inside the house.

Lalita, who feared that her husband would secretly cremate her mother-in-law, left from the house saying that she was going to visit a neighbour. However, the brave woman instead went straight to Vittal police station and complained about her husband's crime.

The police arrived at the spot even as Domabaiyya was making arrangements to cremate his mother, and arrested him.

Lalita is Dombaiyya's second wife. He was earlier married to Nalini from Balnadu in Puttur and had four male children. About 13 years ago, he quarrelled with Nalini and the children, after which he married Lalita and had two children.

Vittal police are investigating the case, based on a complaint by Lalita. DySP P Sadananda Varnekar, probationary ASP Kuldeep Singh, circle inspector Anil S Kulkarni, Vittal police inspector Madhavakudlu and other police officials visited the spot.

@KR Prabhu, bro, in the times we are living in can supression/banning/force serve any purpose, just think?? Will it not be counterproductive? Is it practically possible to enforce a ban on porn, flesh trade, gambling, alcohol, or any other so called bad habits? Bro, it is only through increased awareness and bringing social and financial equanimity that such things can be erased!!! Believe me, FORCE can never yield any positive results, only LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING CAN!!

It is very easy to condemn and pass comments on any individual who has committed a crime, but very difficult to be in his shoes and practice what we preach!!!

We can not generalise stray incidents.Admn, once taken a decission needs to be pro active and strive for its commitment.Positive thinking for good deeds necessarily bring good result...it may take time to settle down. Will power on the part of admn plays greater role.Failure or success of the system needs to be seen on the basis of how the follow up action is perceived. If every thing is looked in to on the basis of political/biased vision nothing could be achieved. It is not necessary that every sytem will succeed..but effort matters and needs to be appriciated.

Very sad and shocking! May her soul rest in peace. Better not to have a son rather than having one like him. On the flip side, she had her final suffering than suffering on a daily basis at the hands of her son. Poor lady may not have had a day in peace and looking at the condition, hard to believe whether she had food every day. At that age she had no other choice than to live with him. Whether alcohol, greed, jealousy, enemity etc. in a nutshell humanity is dying down very fast and God only knows where we will end up.

Very cruel act! May the deceased's soul RIP!!

Both extremes of the pendulum of abundance is invitation to addiction!!! There is very minuscule scope for such poverty ridden families to grow up the money curve without help from outside hence they find solace in intoxicating items!!

@K R Prabhu, you are not aware that liquor is available easily if you are able to shell money in the particular state you are talking about! The poor resort to home brewed stuff!! It is only a big loss to exchequer and a danger to the health of those who consume illicit stuff!!

Banning liquor will not help. It will only reduce government’s income and the illicit liquor/ spirit trade will blossom. The solution is people like Joseph of Snehalaya. Somebody to should help these kind of drunkards to recover. At our place, social organizations do this job. I think RSS, BD etc should join hands to rescue these kind of alcohol addicts.

Height of Ruthlessness, always torturing and finally killing his OWN MOTHER, under the influence of liquor.
Liquor only fuels the intent which was there already!
Sad looking at the HUT they are living!
But Crores of people are still
living in SLUMS of CITIES, worst than these huts!
STILL these people give priority to LIQUOR over basic necessities.
Any amount of GOVT. or COMMUNITY SUPPORT doesn't help to some to come out of poverty line!
    Reason: Liquor, laziness and mindset!
Banning liquor may have helped to some extent. But where law enforcement is WEAK or CORRUPT, it only encouraged CORRUPTION and brewing ILLICIT LIQUOR and loss of revenue to GOVT.

Here the root cause of the malady is not vote banking,Hindu culture etc.,
Real cause is we have allowed the people to get spoiled by consuming liquor.Government wants money for peoples welfare.Peoples welfare is not posible without banning liquor totally as liquor is the biggest revenue earner for the state. Our politicians have no forsight.Lost forsighted government can not do good to the people.Solution is nothing but TOTAL PROHIBITION IN THE COUNTRY.BJP/CONG WILL NOT DO THIS.SOLUTION IS JUST LIKE MADUVEYAAGADE HUCHCHU BIDADU...HUCHCHU BIDADE MADUVEYAAGADU.ONLY MODI CAN DO THIS.

The location of residence of the accused and his hut tells the living condition of several such poor/BPL families. This is inspite of our rulers harping on poverty elivation schemes embarked several decades ago.It is shameful for the country that even after 65years of independence our people are in such a pathetic financial condition.
Various governments came to power failed to deliver good governence. So the result.Money collcted by tax payers grossly misused....they need revenue for make illegal assets and least bothered the repurcusions down the line among village folks.BAN THE LIQUOR IN TOTO LIKE GUJRAT STATE IF YOU REALLY RESPECT GANDHIJI WHO INSTRUMENTAL IN FREEING INDIA FROM SLAVERY.HE WISHED TOTAL PROHIBITION IN THE INTEREST OF PEOPLE.WHEN OUR GIVERNMENT WILL LEARN THIS?

Often we say poor are God fearing. Hindu culture unlike Western culture teaches to honor and respect the family elders. That is all changing now because violence is everywhere and each one is living for him/her self. Because of the hatred created in the society by vote bank politics nobody wants to come to the rescue of anybody in serious trauma and pain. May God grant this poor mother’s soul eternal rest in peace? And let him get rotten in prison.
