Unemployment continues to fall in Britain

London, Feb 22 (IANS): Britain's unemployment continued to decline between October and December last year, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed.

Some 2.5 million people were registered as jobless during the period, down 14,000 from July to September. The unemployment rate stood at 7.8 percent, 0.1 percentage point less than the previous quarter, reported Xinhua.

A total of 29.73 million people are employed in Britain, of which 73 percent were working full-time and 27 percent part-time.

Meanwhile, the number of people applying for jobseekers' allowance declined by 12,500 to 1.54 million in January.

Although employees' total pay (including bonuses) between October and December 2012 rose by 1.4 percent from a year earlier, the ONS said that "there continues to be a cut in the real value of pay", as inflation remains higher than pay increments.
