Mangalore, Feb 23: Two persons were killed in a ghastly accident at Pumpwell here on Saturday February 23 at around 4.30 pm, when a KSRTC bus rammed into them.

The deceased have been identified as Ritesh Monteiro (28), a resident of Bajal, and Rajesh (52) from B C Road.

Ritesh Monteiro

Ritesh was riding a Hero Honda bike, while Rajesh was walking.

Eyewitnesses said that the accident occured when the driver of a KSRTC bus plying to Hassan tried to overtake and lost control. The bus rammed into the bike rider and the pedestrian, killing both of them on the spot.

Another source said that brake failure caused the accident.

Ritesh, a resident of Bajal, was a plumber and electrician by profession and was working at Kulshekar. Ritesh who worked for several years abroad had returned to his hometown two years back. He is the third among the three sons of Sebastian and Mary. He was unmarried.

It is said that the brakes failed after the bus left from Kankanady bus stop. The bus also hit a pole and an auto rickshaw before coming to a stop.

A few others are said to be injured, including the Activa rider who has reportedly sustained grave injuries. Pedestrian Arun Devadiga (47) was also injured.

Kankanady police arrived at the spot and took the bus driver into custody.

This is not the problem of the person who are walking may be not the problem of the driver, where are foot paths, where are spacious roads, people has to be aware while choosing any govt. by making sure they will do it and not only say it. Otherwise be prepared for many such cases and fight among our self, no politician and their family members should be allowed to enter third turn.

Pumpwell Bus stop is not safe ,traffic Police department is sleeping. yesterday i was there at the accident spot, and 100% its a fault of gov. bus (K.S.R.T.C)Driver.
But The Deep Truth is nothing will happens to that bus driver since he is a Gov. Worker and yesterday he was telling that the breake was failed . its not true because Public saw what the truth is. lets see how our Mangalore Police will handle this case..truthfully or politically like always they do.

It is a matter of regret that accidental deaths are on the increase due to reckless drivers. No doubt the pumpwell circle is a death trap. That however is not an excuse for reckless driving. There was a move once to install speed governors on the buses and trucks. However for some reason this did not materialize.

Each accident is an eye opener. There are experts in the department of law and order and I am sure they can find a solution to the gnawing problems plaguing the public.

It is time that speed governors are fitted in all the heavy vehicles apart from posting traffic police at the vulnerable areas.

There is absolutely no road safety in India. There are no traffic rules, regulations for drivers/motorists to follow, nor there are Traffic or Police Officers monitoring and enforcing rules in India. Is there a rule book for drivers to follow ? Responsible Officers or Dept., should go to western countries and see how the traffic rules are enforced. Every developing country like India should follow road safety rules thru Traffic Dept.to enforce it. Was there any time a dangerous drivers license ever got cancelled due to his dangerous driving with multiple accidents or drunken driving?
It is time to learn by experience.

May the souls of Ritesh Monteiro and Rajesh rest in eternal peace and I wish a speedy recovery of those injured. My sympathies goes to the bereaved family. KSRTC driver must have been in high speed and hence lost control. Daya thanks for the pictures and the scene of the accident is touching.

really sad, poor bike riders may not rescue in future. This shows a negligence of traffic authorty n police control over the traffic. If this happens in such a busy area within the city limits, then wha about in highway???? can pedestrians rescued???? This s stongly condemned and both taffic police n RTO has is responsible along wit the bus driver. rules compromised with reasons.... ha ha ha

May I know at what speed was the bus at this Pumpwell junction, overtake with such speed to lose control and kill most precious lives of two and injuring many. It is high time that the concerned authorities must take necessary steps to introduce TRAFFIC SIGNALS at this Pumpwell Circle to ensure safe Traffic movement and more importantly to save the lives. We may all need few minutes of patience to wait for our turn to Cross this Signal, if it is installed. It is better for everyone to see that in order to save lives its been done. For few days we all feel impatient but when once its operational, we will get used to it.... it is better late than never..

Bus stops should be moved away from the junctions and bus drivers punished for stopping at the junctions and creating traffic chaos. Also buses should stop off the road for picking passengers, instead of stopping in the middle of the road creating traffic jams.

@Edward Monteiro, true, there is absolutely no discipline, but this is due to lack of adequate infrastructure being not provided by the govt.!! Human beings have to run here and there like herds of cattle with no properly designated bus stops, footpaths, parking spaces, signals, traffic police enforcement!!

This particular incident involved a KSRTC bus, but I think it is rare and very very unfortunate!!

The pvt. cartel of bus operators in the city are responsible for most of the accidents, what is the condition of these junk vehicles, which protocol amongst the rules of the land do they follow, who enforces these rules, and what is going on??? Nothing but UTTER CHAOS!!! So, it is in the fitness of things that each individual/s take utmost care of his and his dear ones whilst walking on the roads or while driving!! Here only ones God can protect and nobody else!!

Mangluru infrastructure rating is junk status!!

I am regular use of the Pumpwell Circle and NH 75 (Mangalore-Bangalore road). Some comments appearing here asking for the installation of Traffic Signals. The Pumpwell junction is the meeting point of two National Highways NH No.66 and NH No.75. Installing traffic signals are not feasible on National Highways for obvious reasons and they are not village roads but National Highways meant for faster movement but with cautious approach while approaching the junctions which is totally absent among the road users.

Secondly, most of the Buses whether city or express or service stop at the meeting point of the junctions resulting in total confusion and the driver approaching the road from behind is bound to move further else there will be total blockade bblocking of the Highways.

Our so called educated people of DK and Udupi wait for the buses at the junctions only whether it is at Pumpwell Circle or any other circle in the City. One more example is the Nanthoor Circle where our SO CALLED EDUCATED AND HEALTHY and STRONG PEOPLE wait for the buses at the begning of the junction connecting the Moodbidri-Karkala Road instead of using the Bus Stop which is near the Circle. And in that mad rush, everybody is in hurry specially two wheelers and Autos, entering the place without any traffic discipline and our So Called Efficient Katte Puje City buses do not bother to stop the buses at the Schedule Bus Stops, even though the schedule bus stop is little away.
Many a times two wheelers also drive rashly at the junction. NOBODY in DK AND UDUPI Districts have patience and everybody is in hurry. Results = Accidents. It is easy to blame others when we are at fault. It is a nightmare for the road users. SEEING IS BELIEVING.

May the departed souls RIP!! What a tragedy, innocent people dying everyday like flies in accidents in such a small city like Mangluru!! Actually, not only Padil, the entire Mangluru infrastructure is in a mess, there is absolutely no planning, no footpaths to walk, no parking spaces, narrow roads, and drivers blatantly breaking traffic rules, chaos rules! Being a yet to develop city, there was immense scope for the planners to make very good arrangements in the road infra!! Just compare with upcoming satellite cities around Mumbai like Vashi, Khargar, of Gurgaon, Noida, how they have been planned with extra wide roads, ample parking space, footpaths, parks, sheltered bus stands, etc.!!!

If one considers from the long term point of view, with the burgeoning population, the hardships for the residents on all fronts be it roads, electric supply, water supply, sewerage, garbage disposal are going to worsen by leaps and bounds!!!

They should do away with this Roundabouts and install traffic signals in this and many other junctions that is the only way to prevent the future accidents.
We can only blame the traffic management Authorities for these accidents they are the people who should make recommendations after assessing the traffic volumes If they are incapable then then they should hire good consultants to do so, so please do not always blame the Road users ,there are highly specialized Engineers for such activities and they should be blamed!
