Shakuntala Shetty makes political comeback - joins Congress

Bangalore, Feb 26 (DHNS):
Former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district, Shakuntala Shetty, on Monday joined the Congress.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwara formally inducted her into the party at a simple function held at the KPCC office here.

Shetty, who had won the Puttur Assembly seat as a BJP nominee in 2004, rebelled against the party after she was denied the ticket to seek re-election in 2008. She unsuccessfully contested the 2008 elections, under the banner of Swabhimani Vedike, against the party’s official candidate Mallika Prasad. Subsequently, Shetty was expelled from the BJP.

Later, she had not joined any political party. However, there was a lot of speculation about her next political move. The JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy had tried to rope her into his party fold. Of late, it was speculated that she may join the B S Yeddyurappa-led KJP.

When contacted by Deccan Herald, Shetty said that she joined the Congress following pressure from her followers.

“I had invitation from various political parties. Of course, the BJP did not invite me. I was away from politics for the last five years. But, I have been active as a social worker. Parameshwara invited me to the Congress and, so, I am here. The BJP has lost all the values it once stood for.”

Asked who had created problems for her in the BJP, she said she would not like to do postmortem.

Ready to contest

Asked whether she would be contesting from Puttur, Shetty said she has not joined the Congress by imposing any conditions. But, if the party gives the ticket, she would contest the polls, she added.

Speaking on the occasion, Parameshwara said the urban local bodies (ULB) elections will not set the trend for the crucial Assembly polls to be held later.

It is not proper to say that the ULB poll results will set the trend. For, only 30 per cent of the people will vote in the civic polls, he added.

When a ship is sinking, the rats are first to jump into the sea.

BJP lost a golden opportunity to rule in south India, but due to the indifferent attitude of their central leadership towards Karnataka, they never took any proactive corrective steps when ever the party lost its way.
Karnataka was looked at just as a source of funds for BJP coffers. They tolerated dissidence, indicipline, corruption, groupism, watching of porno movies in legislature, rape etc.,. There is no point in blaming opposition as BJP has given them every thing they want on a silver plate. The situation is that the supporters of BJP in karnataka can not walk with their head held high any more. BJP has let down its supporters very badly in Karnataka. Pretty soon only bhats, lingayats, and other upper caste hindus will be in BJP...

Good decision. Because Congress is the only one National Party can accommodate and protect all those highest corrupt Politicians. If given a chance to fight and win MLA Seat in Puttur, Shakku Akka can try for one such attempt in corruption and make name as well as money too. What we seen in Indian Political scenario that if Congress Leaders make corruption, they will be supported and promoted to higher post but where as in BJP, such Leader will be sacked from their post and sidelined forever. So, off course people will look at their future and joins Congress only

why anyone should talk against a politician shifting from one party to another?
It is same like N. N. shifting from present job to another lucrative one. I'll do the same, if the other company is as good or better and pays beter. Who will not - let's hear from guys here.
Same way - it is a JOB for MP, MLA, Minister etc etc., same like N.N. and me and others. It has boiled down to - how much more money one can make from the position one holds, in the shortest possible time.
It is not easy to become a politician - one has to learn goondagiri (life-threatening) from college days, has to have the knack to gather party workers around him and keep them with him. He has to join a Political party(Cong.\BJP etc) initially for identity. Lot of money is spent until one comes to this stage. He has to be POWER HUNGRY all the time until he succeeds.
And I see many here commenting "They are power hungry).
Politicians have to be power hungry. either by hook or crook they have to win - in this party or the other party.
So it boils down to job hunting for better earnings for them in the political arena.
No one can truthfully say he is very faithful to the party he is in.
As such, in the present "expensive" world, one cannot remain faithfull to their original party when money coming in has dwindled - then time to shift!!!

Do you guys think changing party just before upcoming election, becuase you haven't got ticket from your previous party, will change your luck!!! No, is the answer. The main thing is it's this is not the mattter of luck. This is result of what you did to the society in your political carrier. My simple suggestion is stop changing party " do some good work, put some sincere efforts to improve the comman man's living condition" it will give a positive results in election wether you contested thru congress, BJP or independtly.

She was the best MLA we had.She is akka to everybody.BJP betrayed her as it betrayed state. Last time she missed minisership as Yeddy was insiting on Shobha and now they have also ditched the party after enmassing illegal wealth
