Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Feb 28: The Kavoor area in the city was flooded on Thursday February 28 evening after a water pipe burst.

The incident occured at around 6.30 pm at Gandhinagar entrance in Kavoor.

Speaking to daijiworld, Kavoor corporator Deepak Poojary said that the water to the area is supplied through a pipeline from Bondel tank.

On Thursday, a PVC pipe measuring 10 inches burst due to air lock and high pressure, he said.

The area was flooded, causing much incovenience to commuters and pedestrians. Traffic was disrupted for quite sometime.

The corporator said that as a result of the incident, residents in the area will face water shortage for the next two days.

Repair works are under progress, he added.

Looks like a faulty network design is the culprit. There should be an air release valve (ARV) at the high point elevation. Looks like this problem was persistent for a long time. But because of a sudden surge the air pocket managed to push through the pipe wall.

When you get this repaired make sure that the ball type or spring type auto ARV is installed in case this is an air pocket at an elevation, else this incident will repeat.
