Kasargod: Locals stall work on Kochi-Mangalore gas pipeline at Kumble

Kasargod, Mar 2: Residents led by an action committee opposed and stopped the work on Kochi-Mangalore natural gas pipeline project at Inchlampady in Kumble on Thursday February 28.

It is said that the pipeline work was going on in the area without any prior notice or compensation to land owners, and several arecanut trees were chopped off. Angered by this, the residents and farmers joined together and laid siege.

GAIL is said to be handling this project. "Without giving prior notice or compensation to farmers, they (GAIL) have started the work of installing the pipeline. In Inchlampady, the pipeline has been installed in the agricultural areas and as a result a lot of property has been lost," said the protestors.

The locals allege that less than 20 meters is needed to lay a pipeline, but in the fields they have used more than that and claimed that officials did not keep their promise.

The pipeline installed in the area will now reach Mangalore after passing through areas like Heroor, Bajpe, Kayyar, and Kulai. The residents alleged that during the installation, a lot of property of the public will be used.

D S Mohan Kumar, action committee convener, Mahesh Bhat, president, Shankar Tailor, Praveen Amettodu, Sridar, Umesha, Yusuf Inchlapady, Jayaram Shetty, Trivikrama, and Narayan were part some of the people at the protest.

    I'm a person who is about loose property for this project. I bought a new land 3 years ago with a very high rate due to the fair value system in this area. This project was never mentioned from any where such as village office or register office at any point of time and I was unaware of a project like this till last last February.

    Now what I come to know is I will loose my crops and I will not be able to do any constructional activites in my land due to this pipeline. Loosing crops is not a big concern for me. But loosing the authority to construct buildings in my land is a serious concern as its affecting my lands resale value. The GAIL is always taking about the crops and not mentioning aout the resale value of the property. They should change the route along the sides of national high way instead of the private lands. GAIL should be reaady to take up the cost for re routing the pipeline as the public will never get the cost savings that the gas companies get through the pipeline project.Else there should a be better compensation packages to those who provide land- something like life long free Gas cylinders or something like that.

    Such colorful fertile soil and standing crop for a little price this multi million corporation after paying corrupt blood money to the politicians is sacrifice. Good job by the activist and farmers. We want development but keep Mangalore green and clean. Please.

    prosper at whose cost? If agriculture was your livelihood where you have toiled for years, would you be just sitting and watching your fertile land being taken away from you? Place yourself in their position and then comment!

    As per the new acquisition law the company should get consent from farmers. compensation amount to be fixed with consultation of District commissioner.only after all the formalities land to be acqiured.I dont think gail co is followed all the rules and regulation. They acqire more land than they require so that later they can lease out to some other co. later they can show profit in their balance sheet.It is nothing but making money from poor people and farmers land. If farmers are satisfied they will never object for development. Development should be taken place but not at the cost of only farmers. like Modi is doing in Gujarat, farmers should be satisfied and compensated with real justice. why there is no acuasition problem in Gujarat. so my request to gail first show justice to farmers and do the devlopment.

    Its feels really bad when someone destroying the well grown field or fertile land. There should be someone thinking on this. We could plan to get the development done without much effect to nature / land or people. Its is possible like happening in most developed country. We should give our next generation atleast a good n fresh environment.Our govt should think bold get together and stop this destruction. Again i say we need development but not at this rate. There should be proper planning done not to effect the environment or nature. we have so much barren land why we dont use it...
