Udupi: Gold chains stolen from Milagres Cathedral Shrine

Udupi, Mar 4: Thieves struck Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur here on the intervening night between Sunday March 3 and Monday March 4.

The thieves decamped with two gold chains from the idol of Our Lady of Miracles at the shrine, while the crown of Infant Jesus was found lying on the base of the idol.

The lock on the glass case containing the idol was found to be broken.

The incident came to light on Monday morning when devotees came to pray at the shrine. They immediately informed parish priest Fr Stany B Lobo who in turn called the police.

Malpe police visited the spot. Inspector Jayanth said that the theft might have been committed by children or some people and not professional thieves.

A security guard was on duty during the night, however, he was unaware of the incident.

Fingerprint experts also visited the spot. Malpe police have registered a case and investigation is on.

Certainly the thief will be get caught soon as the same thing has happened to Tippu's soldiers when they came to attack the same statue and at same spot. However, this thing was waiting to happen anytime as the whole area is poorly lit in the nights and no lights are in the vicinity or on the grounds. When this was brought to the notice , it is told of the inflated electricity bills for the Church. At least this incident is an eye opener for the church authorities or a divine sign from above to lit up the area and the school/college grounds during nights.

Whatever money is collected in Church is shared with the poor. Every Church has helped the poor in many different ways to say the least. I have seen this with my own eyes because I have mingled with the Catholic community ever since my childhood. I had plenty of Catholics in my neighbourhood too. They are warm, trustworthy and hospitable people. May God shower his blessings on them.

Mr. Razak, you said it right. But I would like to add all Mangaloreans are good natured people. I remember one such a trip by train to Mumbai. I met a Shetty family with whom I shared Kori Rotti(they had packed) and that was so good. We need mutual trust not the religious divide. We should leave that to the politicians.

Mother Mary never required gold, instead she would have been happy if this money was used to take care of the needy who have no shelter, clothing and food.Let us all pray for the thief who has taken it away, that he returns it, it will be one more miracle in the cathedral shrine.

Mr. Karithota. Anybody who knows a little of economics knows that the day government will seize all the gold the country will crash. All banks will go bankrupt. The money you have kept in banks have been given out as loans by the banks taking gold as security. if that gold belongs to the government then who will repay the loan?
On the other hand i wish the robbers a all success in their future burglaries. Instead of that gold chain being on a statue its better if the robbers wife and children will eat stomach full for a few days. God doesn't need your gold.

Please use this money to better job, Education/Food for the poor’s. Definitely god will bless them. For thieves Valuables comes from either rich or poor, God or saitan , does not make any difference. They only want money.

The Church should strongly discourage people from offering gold chains, sarees, crowns etc.. and convince them to donate that money to the poorest of the poor within their own family . Mother Mary will really bless them. Hope this poor theief will spend the money from the stolen goods on something beneficial to other human being.

When the houses in and around Udupi are not safe, how come the temples, masjids and churches are safe??? The realistic value of the yellow metal and soft targets like worship places are hotspots for the theives to lay their hands on....Temple trustees/management of churches and masjids, please keep Gods jewellery in safe lockers in banks and leave alone the idol...one requires presence of idol for worship and not the jewellery... No body would steal the idols unless they are made of expensive metals...
