Mangalore: Amid high security, district gets ready for polls

Mangalore, Mar 6: "Seven urban local bodies will go for polls in the district on Thursday March 7, for which 544 election booths have been installed, 380 booths in Mangalore city corporation (MCC) limits," said N Prakash, deputy commissioner.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday March 6, N Prakash said out of the total 554 election booths in the district, MCC has 380, Moodbidri 23, Ullal 39, Bantwal 31, Puttur 42, Belthangady 11 and Sullia town panchayat 18.


70 sensitive and 84 highly sensitive booths

N Prakash said that out of 544 booths, 70 have been identified as sensitive and 84 as highly sensitive. Among the sensitive ones, 31 are under MCC, 2 in Moodbidri, 3 in Ullal, 12 in Bantwal, 10 in Puttur, 3 in Beltangady and 9 in Sullia.

Among the highly sensitive booths, 61 are under MCC, 2 in Moodbidri, 3 in Ullal, 11 in Bantwal, 2 in Puttur, 2 in Belthangady and 3 in Sullia.

In this regard, head constables and police constables have been deployed in sensitive and highly sensitive booths and in general booths PC and home guards are appointed, he said.

For smooth flow of election, altogether 47 sector officers (32 in MCC) and 68 police sector teams (47 in MCC) have been deployed, said N Prakash, asking voters to cast their vote freely and fairly.

Altogether around 3,000 officials and staff have been appointed in the booths and for their transport, 84 buses, 22 jeeps and 27 maxi cabs have been arranged.

To sum up, he said preparations are on full swing and tight security has been deployed in every booth to avoid any untoward incident.


4,63,791 voters in the district

Altogether there are 4,63,791 eligible voters in the district out of which under MCC there 3,26,995 (male 15,81,121, female 16,88,74), 18,982 in Moodbidri, 38,015 in Ullal, 28261 in Bantwal, 34,382 in Puttur, 5,390 in Beltangady and 12,051 in Sullia. In all, there are 2,37,809 female voters and 2,25,982 male voters.

Harish Kumar, MCC commissioner was also present at the press meet.


Voting machines

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were taken to each of the 60 wards under MCC amidst tight security on March 6.

The EVMs were first brought to Rosario College from where they were taken to the respective booths across the city.

Election officers and other officials were present on the occasion and oversaw the procedures.

Tight police security was in place.
