Udupi, Mar 7:
Sri Vishweshatirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, who had earlier said that he would not vote, changed his mind, perhaps out of media pressure, and cast his vote later in the afternoon at Thenkupete ward here on Thursday March 7.

Speaking to media persons he said, "As the media has now highlighted the issue, I do not want to give any adverse messages to the public and society by not casting my vote, hence I have changed my decision."

He asserted, "The decision is purely mine and no party or persons have forced or influenced me."

Swamiji had expressed his decision not to vote as he was unsure whom to vote for, and because he felt these elections were not so important.

Voter turnout

The Udupi CMC polled 71.14 percent, Kundapur TMC 76.15 percent, Karkala TMC 76.16 percent and Saligrama registered 77.53 percent polling.

Overall, 74.99 percent of the electorate cast their votes in the district.

Dr Boralingaiah (SP) said that the polling was largely peaceful and no cases of security violation were reported officially.

However, scuffle broke out between BJP and Congress workers at Chitpady after BJP candidate Naveen Bhandary was allegedly found paying money to voters. The issue was sorted out later.

DC Dr M T Reju confirmed that no cases of malfunctioning of EMVs or other untoward incidents were reported in the district.

Udupi, Mar 8: In Udupi district, by noon the percentage of voter turnout stood at 35.21, with Udupi CMC recording 32.58 percent, Kundapur 31.7 percent, Saligrama 39.61 percent and Karkala 36.96 percent.

The voting went on peacefully.

Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Oscar Fernandes who came along with wife Blossom to vote at Ambalpady ward, expressed confidence that Congress would win this election. He also urged all people to cast their votes and said that it is primary duty of every citizen.

Meanwhile Sri Vishweshatirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math chose to stay away from the election. Speaking to media persons, he said that he was in confusion over whom to vote for, and decided not to vote at all.

"I am not opposed to voting. I go to vote every time there is election, and this is the first time that I have stayed away. These elections are not so important, but I will vote during the Assembly elections," he said.

Pejawar Swamiji and his thinking towards the society, his vision the mission and its good values is commendable.Mixing his stature with politics is bit unfortunate and a exception.

    @Samad,Udupi
You are 100% right.Oscar is not a peoples representative in real meaning, since several years. He was rejected by the people of Udupi hence Congress accomodated him as a 'Utsav moorthi'.Those who are not working for the betterment of their constituency/native place inspite of being in power/close to power are mere waste and liability to the soceity.Instantly look at Sri J.P.Hegde,MP who won in the recent bye election is doing a wonderful job without much fanfare and wondering without bandwagons.
It is worth mentioning here in the context of your pointed reference, that Late Sri Ullal Srinivas Mallya, a three time MP from Udupi Lok Sabha has made enormous contributions to his constutuency during his tenure(1952-1962) and considered as "Father of modern DK dist".He was very close to Late Jawahar lal Nehru,PM and who fondly used to refer him him as 'Mallaiah'.People at power should draw inspiration from people like Late Mallya sir.He was really a "Yug Purusha" and "Prathasmarneeya" for DK/UDUPI people.

Mr. Shaan, I am not a follower of the BJP, but believe, I was born and brought up in Udupi, the developement what the BJP in the Muncipal level have done is outstanding, Congress will never do and have never done, I can give u hours and hours of explanation and debate, and in Udupi level there is not a single congressman who is even capable to do the jobs, most of them are just followers not leaders, and regarding Pejawar Swamiji, the little we say the better, he is one of the greatest religious leader we have around, we should pray for his long health he is brain behind lot of peace in this temple city, he always has spoken for religious harmony, and it is decision which party he votes, one vote might not make a difference, but a non BJP adminstration, will definatly be a track backwards in developments in udupi, watch out and u will agree with me some day, no heartfeelings, just telling the reality, Congress in udupi says, "We Will Do" and the BJP in udupi says " We Have Done", this is what has happened all along, atleast Udupi Muncipality is concerned, so lets hope the best for our Udupi

Now a days Politics is a just money making business in India. Most of the politicians don't care about development just think about themselves how to make money whenever they get the opportunity. Better to abstain from voting.

Media has given more wrong message then Pejawar Seer hear. Pejawar had just told that all candidate where good & close to him, & had taken his blessings, & he was confused as to whom to vote. So he would abstain from voting as he had felt this election not so important as Assembly or Parliament election.

But media kept repeating the one line from seers statement interpreting it wrongly 24 x 7. Better telecast the Seers statement in whole to public than highlighting a single line, so that people can judge themselves. Better media not themselves pass judgement.

Is it 100% mandatory to vote in India? Its upon discretion of a person whether to vote or not, since we are in a democratic system.. Please advice your family and relatives about voting first before lecturing some others.

almost every citizens in this country are confused like Sri Vishweshatirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math. He has done a noble job by not voting at all!! Unfortunately most of the priests just before voting force religious disciples to vote for particular party. May be they are used with it or paid for that. This is known as communal politics. Keep away from political parties & show them road towards Arabian ocean!!
