Congress set to rule Mangalore, Udupi City Corporations

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore / Udupi

Mangalore / Udupi, Mar 11 : Ruling BJP party has suffered a heavy defeat in the twin districts of coastal region of Mangalore and Udupi by gaining absolute majority in both corporations.

In Mangalore, out of 60 city corporation wards, Congress won 35 seats, defeating the ruling BJP, which could manage to win only 20 seats.

In a surprise result, former mayor Gulzar Banu has lost by a margin of 645 votes. Ayaz of Social Democratic Party of India secured 1745 votes to win the seat.

Speaking to Daijiworld, former mayor Ashraf expressed happiness over Congress victory and said that it showed that people have come to know about BJP's corrupt rule. "Congress will continue to rule like in the last 20 years and give good administration," he said.

However, Ashraf threw a surprise when he said that he was not capable of being block president of Congress as his ward candidate had not won. He said he has already submitted his resignation from the post to the party and will decide his future in politics within the next one week.

Young Congress candidates like T Praveenchandra Alva, Asha Dsilva, Sabitha Misquith have registered thier first victory in Corporation election. Veteran Lancelot Pinto, Jacintha Alfred and Naveen D'Souza managed to retain their seats.

In Udupi, out of 35 city corporation seats Congress won 22 and BJP managed only 12.

Its a Sad thing that people are enjoying the Victory of Deepak Poojari. There are no water drains in Kavoor. All he does is make water flow into each others property if you dont agree he brings a JCB and Breaks the wall when questioned he acts like a local gundda but in corporation he shows his self as a very loyal person. Split personality. Wish he really get someone who can utleast understand english forget about speaking which they cant dream of in their life. Its a pity we have this Corporater and where he does not do any work. Waiting for some improvement in Kavoor and that is possible only when he is changed please dont vote without knowing if the person can help or not

lobo Roshan, Mangalore don't be so happy. Now please advise your secular kangress to work towards development and not spend their with vijayotsav celebration for months together. Please don't think that people are happy with congress and voted them. Also there is lot of differences between MCC & assembly elections. In MCC election people vote on the basis of candidate and not on the basis of party.

    Hi,
After seeing the below comments and fighting for no reason, one thing we should remember that people may not necessarily have voted whole to congress. As political pundits say the big reason for the BJP defeat is in incumbency factor. If frankly people analyse to find out which is the best party to vote, then answer would be no party capable of ruling this nation at present scenario. So people voted congress because they so much hate BJP for their lack of governance and not because they love congress. So all congress leaders should understand that unless they deliver what they have promised to people , they also face same defeat in the next election. I really feel pity when people start taking this is because he hated that religion, this guy hated other religion. People should know that at the end of the day all political parties are same.So stop blaming each other and lets look for good governance , less corrupt administration.

I agree, People have chosen lesser evil, not that they love Congress. BJP is the evil people want top get rid of, once and for all. Don't say that BJP did not play communal trump card. They threw stones at Churches under the pretext of conversions! What will they do now? Only Truth will prevail and it require no hatred of other people. People of Karnataka in general, and Mangalore in particular should realize that BJP cannot fool all people at all times. Through out Cngress if they don't serve well. Zero tolerance to corruption. Yeddi, Reddi and Kakhi chaddi should not be an issue. Mangalore ki jai!

They turned the peace loving coastal districts in to communal sensitive areas.

Congress did nothing good to the coastal area. but dint spoil the communal harmony also

However BJP ruined the coastal districts with their communal agenda. Once the area was highlighted for education institutes and temples is famous for communal disharmony. This is the only reason i hate BJP

In Kundapura region Jayaprakash Hegde managed to get more than expected votes within the city jurisdiction in earlier MP election. That point of time many of us thought of BJP is going to vanish in near future.

Now look at the result earlier Municipal President Mohandas Shenoy of BJP & Co still manages to have the power. Off course during his period Kundapura Municipality got few awards for waste management & drinking water facility etc.

OUTCOME: Kota’s fame in coastal area & Halady has big fan following community in interior side of taluk would be tough task for Congress to tackle. Congress really needs to pull their socks and has to work very much harder to get result in forthcoming election!!!

JPH has to fulfill his commitments in aggressively (Kundapura Railway Station issues, Kodi & Anagalli Bridges & Many more).

There are lot of points for BJPs defeat. First of all, their over-confidence and laziness has lead them to defeat. One can recall the lethargic approach by them, on account of which, the Mayor was from Congress. Apart from this the dent created by the dirth Ex hief Minister Yediyurappa and Mr. Dhananjay pushed down the morality. Moreover, they should learn a lesson from this and have to give thrust to improvement and development rather than trying to encash the lapses by the opponent. Better luck in the Parlaiment and Assembly Elections.

Yeddyurappa's has grabbed 240 seats in first ELECTION sure BJP need to think about the KING MAKER......of KARNATAKA.....BJP not by advani but sure MODI will take B.S. Congress, now that you have majority and would be ruling the Corporation for five years please dismantle all unauthorised structures erected by the saffron extremists - including saffron flags on bus stand and road sides - with iron fist, and maintain the sanctity of public places. We have a well-placed and functional system in the city, but is sadly lacking the will power to function, rejuvenate it and nip in the bud the so-called MORAL POLICING.

In the last elections to ULBs in 2007, out of the total 5007 wards, the Congress had come first winning 1606, followed by JDS 1502 and the BJP 1180........ In present Election the Congress bagged 1227 wards, followed by JDS at 603 and the ruling BJP at 583.......... the logic is simple.... In both the case the BJP is in third position and came to Power in 2008 Assembly election..... and same will happen in 2013..

Jeevan sir...what a statement? If BJP wins then it's due to Karnataka BJP's good work and if it looses, then money power or liquor power? This shows your literacy level and how crooked you are. Now BJP has to do just "Chinthan Manthan". Communal agenda won't give BJP any hope. They need to concentrate on communal harmony and development. Attacks on churches, attacks on minorities, attacks on unarmed men and women and recent attack on prayer house by goons supported by BJP are reasons for BJP's downfall. If Congress resorts to these tactics, then it also will fall to the same level. Nowadays people are smart and they know exactly whom to vote. I asked some of my hindu friends in Mangalore about BJP winnng in Mangalore, they said "No Way". We don't want this communal BJP anymore. We made a mistake by electing them to power but now we are paying for our mistake. About Congrss, they are of the view that Congress is better than BJP and we have no alternative left. So it's congress wave now and BJP's operation Kamala bombed down by smart voters.

I had read regularly in many of the columns (in DW) that BJP will boot out CONGRESS from INDIA. But thanks to the results, We can believe that this is beginning for BJP to get booted out from minds of PEOPLE of INDIA. (I know that CONGRESS is not a clean party, they will have to work sincerely hard for the people to gain confidence).

The area around the Rosario School has been converted to a fortress in view of the counting of votes All that is welcome but care should be taken by the concerned authorities not to trouble the public. The road in front of the pandeshwar mahalingeshwar temple is barricaded at its entrance. The other road in front of the TB is narrow and both ways of traffic has blocked this road because even the lorries are seen plying on this road. People like me who are working and have to get out of the house at any cost to reach our office had a tough time coming to the main road. There were so many bikes parked unorganisedly on this road with a number of youngsters simply adding to the crowd and confusion. It would be better if such events can be held in some other place with broad approach roads so that it doesnt inconvenience the people. Added to this was the chaos created by the people visiting the temple and the stage erected in front of the temple.
