Bangalore, Mar 11 (PTI): Opposition Congress in Karnataka put up a sterling performance in the elections to urban local bodies as political heavyweight B S Yeddyurappa played spoilsport to ruling BJP but made no big independent electoral impact ahead of assembly polls just two months away.

Congress won 1,960 wards as against 906 each secured by BJP and JD(S) of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda in the March seven poll counting of votes for which was taken up today.

The polls in urban pockets of the state were seen as a "semi-final", coming as it does in the run up to assembly elections due by May.

The Karnataka Janatha Paksha of former Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, who quit BJP in November last made its electoral debut securing 274 wards.

The former BJP strongman dented the ruling party's prospects but failed to make much impact statewide on its own, exemplified by his party's performance in his home district of Shimoga where KJP could secure only 34 wards out of 176 with Congress bagging 64, JD(S) 40 and BJP 24.

The BSR Congress of former Minister B Sriramulu, who had also broken away from BJP and tested the political waters, won 86 wards, eating into latter's votes.

Independents made it big, winning 776 wards and are all set to play a key part in formation of urban local bodies where the elections have thrown up fractured verdict.

Elections were announced to 208 urban local bodies (4976 wards) -- seven city corporations, 43 city municipal corporations, 66 town municipal councils and 92 town panchyats.

Congress won the city corporations of Davanagere, Mangalore and Bellary. BJP was routed in Bellary, where the mining barons Reddy brothers, had a stranglehold, drawing a blank. Mysore and Gulbarga city corporation elections were marked by a fractured mandate, with Congress emerging as the single largest party.

The only saving grace for BJP was from Hubli-Dharwad city corporation, the home town of Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, where the party bagged 33 wards of a total of 67 but is not in a position to come to power on its own.

Candidates had won in 85 wards unopposed while there was no nomination in one ward in Chikkaballapur city municipal council.

"It's a warning bell to all political parties", Shettar said in his reaction. "There was illusion in some quarters that BJP will be wiped out. It has not happened. BJP is intact".

Noting that a large number of independents have won, he said this showed that local issues weighed heavily on the minds of voters, Shettar added.

Congress saw the outcome as a "clear mandate" in its favour and a precursor to the coming elections. "It's clear that people are yearning for change", President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, G Parameshwara said.

JD(S) state unit President H D Kumarswamy said the party would debate on the reasons why it fell short of 300-400 wards it had expected to win and take corrective action for the assembly polls.

In the last elections to urban local bodies in 2007, out of the total 5,007 wards, Congress had come first winning 1606, followed by JD(S) 1502 and BJP 1180.

Defeat in K'taka civic body poll 'alarming': BJP

BJP today accepted its defeat in the local bodies elections in Karnataka as "alarming" and the party will introspect but claimed it will spring back in coming Assembly elections.

Asked about the party's debacle in local bodies polls in the state, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said, "We did not win in the local bodies elections. We have lost and this is alarming. We will definitely introspect about it."

The BJP MP recited a poem by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to say that the party remains unfazed in the face of defeat and will strive to gain victory.

"In the Assembly elections we will do well and we will win the elections," Hussain claimed.

Though BJP put up a brave front, sources said former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa's decision to form his Karnataka Janata Party had affected the party's fortunes and led to its rout.

BJP leaders claimed the results show that had Yeddyurappa not quit the party, it would have emerged triumphant in these polls.

This poll outcome is likely to make BJP think about its future plans as Assembly elections in Karnataka are just a couple of months away.

With senior party leader L K Advani having categorically expressed his opposition to Yeddyurappa and pulled up the party at its recent national conclave for not removing him promptly from the post of CM, BJP will find it difficult to forge and any pre or post-poll alliance with KJP.

Not having any electoral understanding with Yeddyurappa's party is likely to see a repeat of the local bodies polls in the Assembly elections as his candidates could cut into BJP votes and lead to the party's ouster from power, said a party leader.

if you leave aside infighting thamasa of BJP, they faired better in development compared to DharamSigh of Congress/HDK. In Corruption front no one can beat Congress. Issue with people like yeddi & Reddy they don't know how to eat money, one accepted checks and one used muscle power. Every body(all parties) involved in illegal mining, why only Reddy is in CBI net.

    Grapes are sour for you.
Last time bjp was junior partner in coalition.
This time, bjp is ruling party with majority and with sangh entrenched deeply. Still,it was decimated in its hindutva strongholds. yeddy effect only in some north ktaka areas. And yeddy employed less than 2000 candidates. But bjp lost heavily all across karnataka.
Bjp's end has come. So have yours.

I really appreciate your comments. whatever you described here about political leaders, is absolutely true. Before the election they ready to catch even begger's feet also. But once they win in the election, they won't recognize anyone. Most of the leaders i have heard & noticed they are uneducated, sexologist and corruptible only. They recognize only their fly members. well said, keep it up.

All Congis dance to the tune of Media hype but did not realize that in spite of solicited anti BJP mood they could win only 354 Seats more compare to the tally of Year-2007 total Seats of 1,606. BJP lost 274 Seats compare to Year-2007 total Seats of 1,180 but KJP won 274 Seats and BSR won 86 Seats. So, in total BJP KJP BSR=1,266 it means, had the damages not done by Yeddy and Ramulu Parties in fact BJP could have won 86 Seats more compare to Year-2007. But the major loss is for JDS compare to their last Year-2007 total Seats of 1,502, means they lost popularity by losing 597 Seats this year. And also Independents made big move by 150 Seats more compare to 627 total Seats in Year-2007. So, now worry factor will haunt back Congiss rather than hurting BJP or KJP. Some even said BJP come 3rd place but they have to bite their own tongue since BJP still in 2nd place by just one seat more than JDS. So, Congiss… how can your Party win next election whether in Karnataka or Central with so many corruption skeletons in your cup board? Some even said Grape is sour. But Sour taste is better than sweet for your body & soul too

The comments in this column show the ecstasy of Congress supporters and agony of BJPians.

As far as BJP is concerned, this is the result of display of anger of voter. The elected MLA's have ditched the voters. Look at the catoons such as Halappa, Renukacharya, Katta, Reddy brothers and so on. Voters were just waiting to teach a lesson to the ruling party. Therefore, BJP has self inflicted injuries.

There is no need for the congress to be over jubilant because this is a result of negative voting. If BJP learns the lessons and fields honest candidates, they can bounce back with the star image of Modi.

But the real challenge for BJP is how to change the mood of the people within a couple of months.

Actually, this election would have been a golden opportunity for Aam Admi Party to kick out the useless parties.

Result is on the expected lines but many people never expected that BJP will be pushed to the third place in the state. In Mangalore if not for SDPI & JDS, BJP would have fared much badly.

Now people have given an opportunity to Congress and they should work for the people without being complacent. They should bring back the communal harmony in Dakshina Kannada.

It is nice to see that Ramulu and Yedyurappa bit the dust. Both are required to be sent back to jail for all the misdeeds they have done when in power

I will tell you what I felt in the congress, Leaders are selfish, time of election they will beg, after election if you go to them, they will not recognise you, because of caste problem, if shetty wins the election he will keep touch with the shetty,s only, if poojary,s wins the election they will keep touch with them selves, I too as a congress panchayat president, only time of election party will come to us, after that they will not remember us, I openly challenge any one of the leader comes to me and discuss about my this comments, I am ready to clear my feelings including Oscar fernandes, I am extreemly sorry to give this comments, because next election is very near.

The BJP has lost due to the split in the party the combined total of the BJP, KJP and B together is about the same as that of the undivided BJP earlier. In other words, the BJP is down but not quite out. And why is the headline not mentioning the massive decline of the JDS?

BJP fared badly in the elections to the Urban Local Bodies in Karnataka because of 4 main factors:
-TDR: When land is acquired, a piece of useless paper called TDR is given to the land owner instead of adequate compensation. This has caused resentment for the BJP in the minds of people who voted for the party earlier. Solution: Abolish TDR and give a good compensation as in other BJP ruled states like Gujarat or Congress ruled states like Haryana where if the market value as determined by an independent body is say 10 lakhs per cent you are paid 20 lakhs per cent when your land is acquired.Peoples money should go back to people to make them partners in progress.
    - SAS for municipal tax: The process is very cumbersome. Most of the people pay agents to fill the forms. Solution: Why not adopt the Gujarat Model?
    - Infighting: Stop it at once Solution: Deflate your inflated egos.
    - Total ban on plastic carry bags in Udupi and DK: It was a stupid idea, as in a region where it rains 9 months in a year, how do you protect your important documents without plastic. Hon. Supreme court had put a ban on carrybags of less than 40 microns, why not stick to this ruling. Ultimately the administration got a slap on the face when the ruling of the Hon. High Court went against it.

I am so sorry my BJP is losing favour with the people of Karnataka. BJP had given good governance, lot of development, hardly any corruption compared to the Central Italian Govt.
Even jobless people were given various jobs, made them responsible citizens who would take care of brothers and sisters.
We have won though - see the results in Hubli-Dharwad - they have understood our government so also Chikmagalur where we had lost earlier. That show we are not wiped out as yet.
We will show our ability in the ASSEMBLY polls later.
I want to see this Italian led fellows sitting in the opposition which is their permanent place in Karnataka.
We have good support here in this forum with intellectuals, future poiliticians of BJP, Entertainers (porn allowed too), Hi-techs and also gone-with the wind (steady guys) people too. They will be looking after health and mainly your wealth if you vote them again to power.
So many things I\we can promise which you already know and no need o detail here (manifesto)
It is promise given and will be kept to have only ONE CM RPT only ONE (1) CM - rest all DCM.
    Long live our party.
Please do not hesitate to inform all your requirements before we print out our manifesto.
Thank you one and all for your support.

In Mangalore and Udupi, BJP paid a price for the bad image the party created in undivided Daxina Kannada District, particularly in and arround Mangalore City( Church attack/moral policing etc). They thought by bashing minority they can win majority votes. Intelligent voters have proved them wrong. In fact the work done by Udupi Municipality in in most of the area is exemplary for others. Of course anti-incumbency too plays a role. It is time for all parties to put full stop for cheap and communal gimmicks and concentrate for the welfare of common people. 99% citizens of this district wants to live in harmony.

Now, it is the time to wake up and corect the mistakes. The infighting is the first and foremost reason for your losing so badly in the elections. The greatest mistake by BJP is they should have ousted Yediyurappa immediately after Lokayuktha's verdict. The delay is ousting him , and the infirghting thereafter lead to the defeat. Let them learn a lesson, rectify the mistakes and give thrust to the developments or else they would be totally out in the days to come.

Though Congress gained Clear majority in 11 ULB Results but not in other 11 Districts. BJP or JDS or KJP still got a chance to control of ULBs’ to keep way Congress Party having World Record Holder in Corruptions. Districts like, Chitradurga, Shimoga, Mysore (Slap on the face of Siddlu), Bijapura, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Haveri, Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur & Koppal, Congress failed to get clear majority whereby BJP & JDS or KJP can control the ULB in their respective Districts. Looking at the previous trends at various ULBs’, these two Parties made many behind scene understanding to control the ULBs’. I am sure this time too they will make such understanding to keep away Congress by hook or crook. More surprising for Congress is at Mandya they lost to JDS (Ambarish can now keep low profile for minister birth) and at Chikkamagaluru (Moily has to face the tune of 10th Janapath Music). Moreover, JDS is doing better than BJP this time is also not a good news for Congress.

Based on the results there is a real chance that BJP and KJP may come togtheir for the Assembly and they may also have a secret understnding with JDS to under determine congress. Hopefully the voters will give a complete mandate to one party and not come with some khichidi combination.. I am curious to hear the congress CM candidate. If you harass the citizens by attacking pubs, home stay's, ice cream parlours, this is what you get. A well deserved defeat for the BJP which has managed to spoil the image of Mangalore. The final nail in the coffin would be in the assembly elections...

People have teached a good lesson for BJP in Mangalore nd Udupi local body elections.Though people have reposed confidence on BJP in these two cities which are strong holds of BJP but failed to stand upto the aspirations of public.Hope Congress will also learn lesson from the result and give good admn.In Mangalore immediate task for Congress is that to reduce property taxes which have been hiked by BJP three fold. Its time to instospect the defeat by BJP in Mangalore/Udupi.It is Parameshwara's stretegy this time who was instrumental in ing candidatres for the party which has given good dividends. In Udupi JP Hegde's good work and style of functioning has also responsible for Congress victory there.

@Naveen - I would have agreed with you if Congress had swept this election. However it is doubtful whether congress would get more than 50% of the ULB seats. Assembly elections will be a different ball game and it is interesting to note that BJP still put a decent fight. The bigger fight will be the Lok sabha elections when congress will be facing anti incumbency both in center and probably in Karnataka.
Time for the congress people to make money now..

PRASAD....Still you have doubt? No medicine. You from Udupi says so?Udupi first time gone from BJP!!!I am scared now Congress may have sweep in forthcoming election....Anti- incumbency factor will not work because the time gap is very less even for LS poll in 2014.

Sir, Mangalore,Davangere,Udupi,Bellary are most shocking news for BJP and BSR respectively.I think there could be more(negative) on pipeline in Assembly election. KJP gaining strengths and SDPI entered MCC/Managlore is also focus in this point of time @ ULB !!!!Totally anti incumbency waves againt BJP is very much strong than anticipated through out KARNATAKA!!!!

BSR lost in Bellary!!!!!!Mangalore and Udupi, which said to be BJP strong hold surrendered to Congress!!Interestingly,Udupi was completely shocking news for BJP as it conceded first time to Congress. The result shows Congress gains are more than anticipated! DVS is likely to take over BJP in Karnataka immediately.BALIKA BAKRA HOGA DVS SAAB!!!??

Congress should prove that it has zero tolerance to corruption only then they will gain the confidence of ordinary people. Can honesty and politics be combined? BJP has proved they can't!

Not necessary, in fact its high time Mr Gowda , one of the rarest of rare type decent politician took over as the party president. Only he can bring in some dignity to the party now which has lost its credentials because of its internal quarrels and fights. Give full powers to Mr Gowda and he will see to it that BJP regains its lost ground.

The results are clearly shows BJP's trend towards downslide! comparing it's previous results and indicates it's clear way towards the coming elections, people and their verdict to the ruling party.

BELLARY,DAVANGERE and Shikaripura town Municipality gives surprise indications!!!Importantly Shikaripura TM results shows BSY not yet opened his account out of 31 while Congress got 14!!!Bellary Congress 7 while BSR 1 seat..It is just early trends and over all trend in entire Karnataka shows Congress has a slight edge.I think this result will not reflect in Assembly election as these voters are mainly urban and semi urban area.
