AAI to take over Mizoram airport

Aizawl, Mar 11 (IANS): The Airport Authority of India (AAI) will soon take over Mizoram's Lengpui Airport to expand operations, an official said Monday.

The airport, 15 km north of Aizawl, is the lone airport in mountainous Mizoram, which borders Myanmar and Bangladesh.

"The AAI has, in principle, agreed to take over the Lengpui Airport from the Mizoram government. A MoU will be signed soon," an official of the state civil aviation department said.

The table-top airport, inaugurated in December 1998 by then deputy prime minister L.K. Advani, needs huge financial support for overhaul.

Currently, Air India and a private company operate flights between Kolkata, Guwahati and Lengpui airport.
