Bangalore: Retired DGP Shankar Bidari to join Congress

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Mar 16: Former state director general of police, Shankar Bidari, who was hailed for his role in anti-Veerappan operations, is all set to join the Congress. In all likelihood, he will be fielded by the Congress in the coming state assembly election, from Terdal constituency in Bijapur district.

On Friday March 15, Bidari met senior Congress leader, Oscar Fernandes, at the party’s office in New Delhi, and expressed his desire to join the party. Oscar said that the party respects Bidari’s decision and welcomes him into its fold. “There are no pre-conditions. His is voluntarily joining us. The state unit will decide about the timing of his joining. Bidari has not asked us for being fielded in the coming assembly election,” Oscar said later.

Shankar Bidari, who said that he firmly believes that the Congress is the only party having the potential to lead the country towards progress, is now making efforts to fix an appointment with the national president of the party, Sonia Gandhi.

In the meanwhile, it is gathered that the Congress high command has given its nod for the proposal of independent MLAs, D Sudhakar, P M Narendra Swamy, Venkataramanappa, and Shivaraj Tangadi, to join the party. Sources said that a decision about the desire of former minister, C P Yogeshwar, who resigned from the state cabinet recently, and Raju Gowda, to come into the party fold, is yet to be taken. The sources added that the party will screen the background, potential, and local conditions, before permitting people to join its ranks. They added that wherever there is resistance from local party units for the inclusion of the leaders, a decision would be taken after considering all aspects.

Therefore, in all likelihood, many of those who want to join the Congress with a desire to get a ticket in the coming assembly election, may face disappointment, it is learnt.

Good move by Mr. Bidari!! However, i must say that Congress will have to carefully choose the right candidate after studying the ground reality in all constituencies.

In Mangalore North & South, they will require someone from the "majority" community as fielding someone from the minority community (no offence to my minority brethren!) might only weaken their base and the 'swing voters' will prefer voting for the PRESENT 2 city MLA's.

My realistic analysis is that Congis need to realize that the coming elections will be like a game of chess... any wrong move to isolate the Mangalorean 'majority' community will result in serious loss of votes.

I too fully agree with N.M.about Congress Party fielding a candidate
for Mangalore South and North from
majority community if they want to
defeat BJP candidates from both the
    constitutions.Vinay Kumar Sorake,
Kripa Amar Alva or any other candidate would be better.
Candidates from minority communities may not get full support from major communities.
If Congress want to win the both
seats from Mangalore South and North they should reconsider their
    stratergy instead of pleasing the
    minority communities.

Very very important point raised by N.M,Mangalore and Vivian,Mangalore. In fact this issue was high lightened by me several times in these columns highlighting said points.I do not think that B.J.Poojary group will come to consenses on these line in view of their deep political love for minorities which would cost Congress dearly.
I once again request the concerned of Mangalore to see that only dependable members from majority community are pitted by both Mangalore south/north constituencies this time.If U.T.khader can not be repleced it is OK.At least for Suratkal constituency please consider only majority community which will go along way in establishing a definite assl seat for Congress. It is reiterated that instead of harping on minority factors there should be a broader consenses involving meticulous planning to defeat BJP in Mangalore.BJP should a learn lesson for betreying the peoples trust. There are no other short cuts.

Due to her work Rabkavi Banahatti CMC has come to congress party control in 2013 local body election. Party will give assembly ticket to Umashree only. Give was the second candidate to take highest number of votes in 2008 election, next to shobha Kharandlaje. Umashree is the only candidate to defeat siddu savadi and not Shakar Bidari or his brother.

A good for nothing police officer who milked his 15 minutes of Veerappan fame for very long. Who really believes this obese officer was roaming jungles to catch Veerappan? Yet he milked that fame to get plum assignments in Bangalore and being friendly to all those who were in power.

Bidari played caste card when it suited him (when Yedyurappa was CM) to become DGP. Once done he kicked and screamed and went to Supreme Court to retain his DGP position.

Congress better be careful with this cunning and calculating Bidari saab.

First of all, BJP came to power by poisoning the minds and slitting the society on communal basis. As you said, now we know BJP is a sinking and stinking. "onde sari, onde bari, hoythu mari." If Congress does not sincerely work for the people, it will have similar fate!

About his past, what you said is right.
But sometimes we have to think in his perspective also.
Fighting against Veerappan or arresting him was hell of a task.
Veerappan had compelled the poor Villagers to be his informers!
Again when he was under a boss like BSY, we may understand his compulsions.
But now we may appreciate, his
decision to work for Sarva Dharma Samabhavate.
Don't you think in present political system such people are needed?
