Another arrest in Srinagar fidayeen attack

Srinagar, Mar 16 (IANS): A resident of Kashmir's Baramulla district was arrested Saturday in connection with the fidayeen attack here on March 13 in which five troopers and two militants were killed. This is the third arrest in the case.

Pradeep Singh was arrested following the information provided by the two others already in police custody in connection with the probe into the attack.

Pradeep Singh is a daily wager in a state government department and the probe has shown that he had been a part of those who planned and helped the militants carry out the attack.

Police had arrested a Pakistan national belonging to Multan town from Chattabal area of Srinagar on March 13, who was part of the fidayeen team that carried out the attack but had escaped.

His arrest led to the arrest of another person named Bashir Ahmad from the border town of Uri in Baramulla.

Two guerrillas were also killed in the Bemina gunfight in which five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed and nine others injured.

Bashir Ahmad was reportedly working as a guide to facilitate infiltration of guerrillas into the valley.
