Mangalore, Mar 18: Union minister for civil aviation Ajit Singh on Monday March 18 inaugurated the long-awaited air cargo complex at Mangalore International Airport, Bajpe, and also formally marked the opening of the airport as an international one.

Addressing the gathering, he said that Airports Authority of India had modified the old passenger terminal building into an air cargo complex. "The new international airport consists an area of 1,400 sq meters for international cargo and about 1,100 sq meters for domestic cargo. The facility has annual holding capacity of 5000 metric tons for international import cargo, 13,000 metric tons for export cargo, 18,000 metric tons for domestic in-bound cargo, and 21,000 metric tons for domestic out-bound cargo."

"The Air Cargo Complex facility is electronically linked with centralized cargo server at Kolkata, thereby further enhancing the utilization and effectiveness of available infrastructure. As many as 200 flights are operating every week. The Air Cargo has standard storage facilities for valuable and sensitive cargo. Over a period of time business will evolve and exclusive cargo flights will operate to and from Mangalore. The Common Users Terminal Equipment (CUTE) system has also been inaugurated today, this facility will enhance operational efficiency, reduce turnaround time of craft and will replace the traditional processing of passenger baggage.

He said that other plans for the airport include extension of runway to provide a total length up to 3,400 meter suitable for operation of B747-400/B-777-200 aircraft. "For this, an additional land of 285 acres is required, which I request the state government to provide. Over a period of time, AAI has invested over Rs 250 crore for the development of Mangalore Airport and works worth Rs 100 crore are in progress," he said.

"There is potential for further enhancement of traffic from Mangalore particularly to Gulf countries. The statistics indicate a growth of rate of 6.45 percent for domestic passenger traffic, and 3.9 percent for international passenger traffic. Traffic forecast indicate that after a period of five years passenger growth will be 10.5 percent and cargo growth rate 12.15 percent. The Mangalore Airport where this facility has been inaugurated is ranked 8th in domestic handling in the southern region.

"Air India has planned to launch direct flight to Damman twice a week with effect from March 31. Cargo terminals have been established to provide connectivity with Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai," he added.

Referring to the ghastly air crash in 2010 at Mangalore Airport, he said the government will do all it can to make it as safe as any other airport in the country. Regarding the issue of compensation to kin of victims, he said the matter is likely to come up in Supreme Court and the government will honour whatever decision it takes.

Former Airport director M R Vasudeva was felicitated on the occasion.

Veerappa Moily, union minister of petroleum and natural gas, K S Venu Gopal, minister of state for civil aviation, MPs Oscar Fernandes, Jayaprakash Hegde, MLAs Abhayachandra Jain, U T Khader were present.

Manohar Prasad compered while Agarwal welcomed the gathering.

I am surprised to see comments mentioning about protocol etc but does anyone ask why Blossom (Oscar`s wife) is on the stage and sitting in the front row either Oscar or she should attend functions or the congress supporters think that that she is representing Sonia Gandhi or making them think she is Sonia. This kind of things should be stopped as husbands and wives of politicians, ministers etc should not be allowed on stage and the best part is that she accompanies him everywhere.

Moodbidri Veerappa Moily,Oscar Fernades and JP.Hegde are embarked on a mission to develop Twin districts be it Railway or Air other Commercial projects.International Airport Status, Air Cargo facilities,ONGC Oil Storage facilities,Transport hub etc etc are certainly change the face of Twin districts and especially Mangalor's commercial status which spurs economic activities rapidly.Naveen Kumar Kateel MP,should have participated the historical events because all these projects are under his jurisdiction which also a proud to be part of the program but he chosen to be with PARTY!!!Nalin Kumar Kateel lost a golden chance and for that he himself to be responsible.UPA/MVM are rocking!!!

Whoever Thinking about Protocol Don't worry Mrs Fernandes is doing Photos Cool.....I really failed to understand along with Common Public Like me on what grounds Mrs Oscar Fernandes is shining on Central Govt's Public Function on stage.I Feel All the Political Leaders irrespective of Parties should stop " AITHAPPA " Policies and respect their Status . If it's in Pvt Functions Like Roce - Madirange , Engagement - Weddings , Requiem Masses - Bootha , Kola no issues you attend with your wives or Girl Friends but Not on the Govt Functions...

KRPrabhu, Kudla/Bangalore...weather thier role was there or not, but you can see the inaugral slab, Jagish Shettar, Kateel & Palemar's names are embosed. So am sure they were invivited. CM's presence in the city does not convince their reason for their the absence, in fact even CM should have scheduled his program to be here. I guess s0methign is wrong somewere, its either CM and BJP leaders were informed at the last minute that they couldnot change their plans or they purposely avoided the event as there might be some cold war going on between the 2 parties.

Dear Friend, Mr. KR Prabhu, Kudla/Bangalore

I fully agree with you. as per Protocol, MP must be invited, if invitation is not sent to the MP then this issue should be politically and legally taken up with concerned department.

BUT I STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS IS NOT THE CASE. MP MUST HAVE INTENTIONALLY SKIPPED THE FUNCTION AS THE CHIEF MINISTER WAS ALSO IN THE CITY. ALL THE BJP GUYS MUST BE BUSY DISCUSSING STRATEGY FOR THE FORTH COMING STATE ELECTIONS. IT ONLY SHOWS INEFFICIENCY AND SOCIAL IRRESPONSIBILITY OF PEOPLES ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE.

Such a big event in Mangalore constituency, why Mangalore MP is missing??? Is is forgotten his social resposibility???

IT CLEARLY PROVES MANGALORE MP DOES NOT HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO GET INTERNATIONAL STATUS TO MANGLAORE AIRPORT OR APPROVAL OF AIR CARGO TERMINAL....

    WASTE OF MANGALOREANS VOTES....

ONLY ONE PERSON SHINING ON THE STAGE IS

"MOST EFFICIENT, HONEST, PEOPLES MP Mr.JAYA PRAKASH HEGDE SIR" WHO IS DISCHARGING IS DUTIES AS MP IRRESPECTIVE OF CONSTITUENCY HE REPRESENT.

WE WISH YOU ALL THE GOOD LUCK SIR. WE PRAY TO LORD THAT ALL PEOPLE/CIVILIANS OF MANGALORE CONSTITUENCY, WHO ARE BEEN BLINDED BY TALIBAN LEADERS BY RELIGIOUS PREACHING/AGENDA 9WITH SPEECHES AGAINST MINORITY COMMUNITY) OPEN THEIR EYES AND LOOK INTO THE DEVELOPMENT YOU ARE DOING IN SHORT PERIOD OF YOUR TENURE AS MP AND CHANGE THEIR MINDS TO VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE WHO WANTS CARRY DEVELOPMENT THAN IMPLEMENTING RELIGIOUS AGENDA...

    Sir

Look at Picture 10, 16, 17. Main seat at the center was reserved for Hon.Chief Minister Mr. Jagdish Shetter (There is name board kept on table).

DO YOU STILL THINK PROTOCOL IS VIOLATED AND MANGALORE MP IS NOT INVITED. OR AS USUAL MANGALORE MP BUSY HANDLING PARTY ISSUES (COMMON STATEMENT HE GIVES FOR HIS ABSENCE)
