Bangalore: Shankar Bidari joins Congress, vows to serve till end

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Mar 19: Retired state director general of police, Shankar Bidari, officially joined the Congress here on Monday March 18. In-charge of state Congress affairs, Madhusudhan Mistry, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, Dr G Parameshwar, and other leaders accorded a warm welcome to Bidari at the party office.

Educationist, Prof K E Radhakrishna and Dr S L Jayanna, too joined the party on this occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Bidari pledged to serve the people by remaining in the Congress till the end. "Having served in the police department in various capacities for 42 years, I now want to repay the love, trust and support given by the people. I have hence joined politics.

Asked why he chose Congress, he said it is the the only party which gives opportunities to all people irrespective of community, caste or language. On whether he would like to contest for the assembly elecions, he said he would leave that decision to the party.

Bidari, it is said, wants to make a mark at the national politics. However, the party also is considering the prospects of fielding him from Terdal constituency in Bagalkot district in the assembly election. If this does not come through, he may be chosen to be the Congress candidate for Lok Sabha election from Bagalkot constituency, party sources said. The national leadership of the party is learnt to be considering the option of offering him the post of All India Congress Committee general secretary.

The party wants to cash in on the huge following Bidari has in north Karnataka region on account of his meritorious service as a police officer, and also the fact that he belongs to the powerful Veerashaiva community that has a strong presence there.

This is a great catch for Congress. Mr Bidari was a honest and upright police officer and has a lot of following among people of the state.

Congress seems to be on the upswing.

What a contrast.. just recall the scenes of Siddu Yelling at Bidari when later sent marshals into assembly and himself stood before he door to save fall of Yeddy govt. Dramebaaz.. indeed. For secular(?) Congress, its community first, not his history.

Ravi Ullal...for corruption in congress, you kindly go through daijiworld regularly. If you are checking for comments once in a blue moon, then I can't help it. I cannot tolerate corruption by any political party. Now here we are talking about Karnataka so I limit myself to Karnataka issues here. And for your kind information I am not congress supporter. So I don't like you branding me as congress supporter.

Jeevan..at least better than present BJP government. We had high hopes on BJP but now all hopes vanished. Was going through some other news which indicates that efforts are being made to bring in Yediyurappa back to BJP. This was told none other than our own Sadananda Gowda. To get votes and power, BJP can go to any extent. BJP is scared that it will vanish from Karnataka unless it joins hands with corrupt and communal Yediyurappa. This is the tragedy. If Yediyurappa joins back BJP, then it is the last nail on BJP coffin. Jai ho..

Bollu, Mangalore. Here we are airing our views about 'sinking ship". History it self is the proof which ship has sunk.

In 2004, "India Shining" slogan by BJP sank and till now, they could not come out of that. My question to u, are u still confident?

With regard to scam, no political party is CLEAN. All are birds of the same feather. Hope this is clear.

Karnataka we have mines scam, central many more scams. But the question here is " Sinking Ship". If the Captain is wise and alert, ship will not sink. Congress Captain is quite strong, alert, very capable. Hope this is clear.
Appreciate the wise competitor, learn from them how to win the match.
