Dubai: College of Pharmacy GMU bags awards at DUPHAT conference

Dubai, Mar 20: The College of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University participated with great enthusiasm in the Dubai International Pharmaceuticals & Technologies Conference & Exhibition (DUPHAT) held recently at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, Dubai.

DUPHAT is a dynamic forum for all pharmacists associated with pharmaceutical care, for scientists and for the manufacturing industry.  The faculty and students of the College of Pharmacy,  GMU actively contributed to the scientific sessions by presenting about 20 professional posters and oral presentations.

In his oral presentation the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, GMU, professor Arun Shirwaikar effectively described the evolution of the profession of Pharmacy from dispensing to the patient-focused care  today. Speaking on the title 'Empowering Pharm D' he emphasized that it is a professional degree with a highly structured program of professional practice which not only strengthens but also promotes healthcare services. 

He stated that the experiential learningprovides the knowledge base and skills that students need in order to fulfill the competencies required for the professional clinical practice.He further emphasized that the curriculum of the Pharm D is designed to provide students with the scientific background and skills necessary to provide patient- focused pharmaceutical care services in clinical settings.

The research efforts put in by the faculty and students paid rich dividends when the College of Pharmacy, GMU won two awards at this conference. The poster entitled “Pharmacoeconomic analysis of Infective Endocarditis treatment” authored by Mr.Bashar Abubakar under the supervision of Dr.Kishore Gnana Sam was selected asthe best designed student poster presentation.

The other poster titled “Factors influencing self-medication habits among the educated expatriate community in the UAE“authored by Aqsa Nausherwan, TahiraKokab, Mohammed Kahwajiand supervised by Professor Annie Shirwaikarwas awarded the best student schematicposter.
