Udupi, Mar 21: In an incident that shocked the village of Innanje here on Tuesday March 19, a man killed his younger brother while trying to save his mother from the latter's assault.

The deceased has been identified as Shankar Kotian (47), son of the late Shiva Poojary and Paddu Poojarthi, and resident of Mandedi Undaru in Innanje. The accused is his brother Srinivas Kotian (55).

It is said that Shankar used to annoy his mother and other family members over a property of five acres that was in his mother's name. He lost his job after which he began suffering from mental instability. He used to come home drunk frequently and pick a fight at home.

On Tuesday too he came home drunk as usual and began a quarrel with his mother and even chased around her with an intention to assault her.

In an attempt to save his mother, elder brother Srinivas grabbed a heavy wooden stick and began beating Shankar. The younger brother too retaliated and a physical fight ensued. In the heat of the moment, Srinivas hit Shankar's head with a knife and injured him gravely. Shankar died soon after due to excessive bleeding.

Kaup police who arrived on the spot arrested Srinivas and began investigations.

Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Valekar, inspector Archana, crime SI Rajendra Naik are part of the investigating team.

As the news began to spread, locals one by one visited the crime spot on Wednesday March 20 morning. Karkala sub-division DySP Jayant Shetty too inspected the spot and conducted enquiries.

Parents never keep any 'properties' for there children's. Should give good education as much as possible with more of facilities so as they can able to earn there living of there own. More and more mis-understanding happening in families now-a-days for property. No property - everybody earn and look after there family and lead a decent life - not fall for bad habits.

There is no doubt, alcohol has ruined families and yet people continue to consume. For many people if there is no alcohol during parties, the party is incomplete or they feel the organiser is stingy. It is time that a strong awareness programme is created on the adverse effects of alcohol. We need to do something about it in the interest of our own future and the future of our children. In the meantime, let us pray that God gives strenth to their mother.

Could be this property made by that lady by hard work. she must have thought if she devide this property and give the share to shankar the very next day he will sell and drink. and the condition of that man would be more pathetic than before. What srinivas did is best. If he is daily creating nuisense, better hit him and finish him at once. how many days these two tolerate. Alcohol is responsible for all this. As long as alcohol is there till then this will continue..

Other sight.... Having five acres land could have been divide with each siblings and get rid of these internal fights. Loosing job is a mental stress and during that time requires counselling and moral support. I dont support anyone but this could have been avoided.
