Mangalore, Mar 24: The inspiring life of St Sebastian was recreated by the enchanting play 'Sipoy Saanth' staged at St Agnes Special School grounds here on Sunday March 24.

Fr Antony Serrao, parish priest of St Sebastian Church, Bendore in his welcome address said that the play was staged to mark the centenary year of the Church, and that it was one of the most important events planned for the year.

"The play intends to strengthen people's faith in Christ," he added.

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza called upon the people to make use of the message conveyed by the play. "The play is not meant for entertainment but more for spiritual gain. Everyone should take inspiration from the life of St Sebastian," he said.

He also talked briefly about other saints in Christianity and said that they had sacrificed their lives for Jesus Christ. "The faithful should adopt their preachings in their daily life," he said.

Cultural convener Oswald Pais proposed the vote of thanks.

Ronald Walter vice-president of parish council and Laveena John, secretary shared the dais

The play enchanted the audience who were present in large numbers. The venue was jam-packed with the Sunday evening crowd.

The play, directed briliiantly by well-known dramatist of Konkani Dolla, was based on the true-life story on St Sebastian penned by senior Konkani playwright Konkan Kalashree Claud D'Souza, Bendore. About 24 years ago, it was staged at Don Bosco hall on three stages, but this time at St Agnes Special School grounds, the play was presented on seven stages, at a cost of Rs 3.5 lac.

As many as 130 artistes were part of the play, and all of them performed their roles with elan. The opening scene saw around 25 children dressed in black and white with a song on the life about St Sebastian playing in the background. The play depicted the St Sebastian's journey from an army officer to sainthood, and how early Christians struggled while keeping their faith in Christ.

The play's engaging story was beautifully complemented by fitting music, sounds, attractive lighting and colourful stage setting, that together recreated the medieval era and kept the audience enraptured throughout the two-and-a-half hours.

Rohan Corporation of Mangalore was the main sponsor of the mega play.

A beautiful play which would move any toughned heart. Congratulations to Claud, Dolla, Aloysius and rest of the cast. I watched the full play on TV. Though I am living in Bendur for over 15 years I had no much reverence for this saint(though he is our patron saint). Watching a play on his life has really moved me.
