Puttur: Poll code violation - JD(S) workers' food goes to orphans

Puttur, Apr 2: Rajashekhar, assistant election officer, raided the training workshop of JD(S) workers that was organized in a hall in the town on Monday April 1, and seized food items meant for distribution there. The officials said that they took this step as serving of food at political meetings is treated as poll code violation.

At the beginning of the workshop, breakfast was served to the participants. At the end of the meeting, the organizers announced that lunch had been arranged.

Before the JD(S) workers could taste their food, the assistant election officer, along with town police inspector, Sudarshan, and sub-inspector, Rafiq, raided the place and seized the food items.

The food items were then sent to an orphanage here, to ensure that they do not go waste. The participants of the workshop, therefore, had to return with empty stomachs.

State youth JD(S) vice president, Ashraf Kallega, told the officials that he and other organizers of the programme were unaware of the prevailing restrictions. “We are yet to submit nomination papers. We arranged food for our own workers. We have not arranged for non-vegetarian food,” he explained, in an effort to convince them.

However, the official said that ignorance of law can never be an excuse.
