Mangalore-Dammam flight: Thrilled passengers keenly await take-off

Mangalore, Apr 3: The long-cherished dream of thousands of Mangaloreans is all set to come true with the direct flight from Mangalore to Saudi Arabia less than two hours away from take-off from the Mangalore International Airport.

The flight is scheduled to take off at 5 pm and land at Dhahran International Airport near Dammam after a four-and-a-half hours of journey.

There are altogether 165 passengers travelling, including 109 from Calicut and 56 from Mangalore. The flight will take off from Calicut at 3.05 pm and land in Mangalore airport at 4 pm.

Speaking to daijiworld, Air India Express station manager Melwyn D'Silva said, "Today we are starting a direct flight to Dammam. It was a long-standing wish of the people. There has been very good response, with flights being fully booked for almost a month."

He also said that Air India Express has achieved 95 percent ontime performance, and has received much appreciation for its services. "We started with three flights per week in 2006, and presently we are operating 24 international flights and 13 domestic flights - 37 in all. These include flighs from Mangalore to Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrain, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Muscat and now to Dammam."

He also informed that MP Jayaprakash Hegde and MLA U T Khader will be flying as passengers in the inaugural flight.

Hyder Ali, a passenger from Maddur speaking to daijiworld said that he has been working in Saudi for the past 12 years. "I come down to my native once every year. Till now I had to take the connecting flight from Mumbai which was highly time consuming as I had to first catch bus or train from here. I am very happy about the direct flight now," he said.

Another passenger, Prakash Pereira said that he was going to Saudi on visit visa for the first time. "This is my first visit to Saudi, and I feel really lucky to be part of the first Air India Express direct flight to Dammam," he said.

Laveena D'Souza, who has been staying in Dammam with her husband and children for past 13 years, said that she was on her way there with her son Flanish and daughter Fiona. "Every time we used to take connecting flights from Bahrain, Mumbai or Dubai. In Mumbai we had to change from domestic to international airport and would get only one hour on hand. This facility of direct flight to Dammam is too good," she told daijiworld.

Ansbert D'Souza, chief operating officer of Air India Express also conveyed his warm wishes.

Airport director Radhakrishna and Airport manager for Air India Sudhir Bhat were present.

It feels great to see new flights start to and from the middle east to mangalore. But for us mangis living in south-east asia, specially singapore to comedown to Mangalore is a nightmare! while holidays are scarce, travel time is really long, we have just 2 options, fly to Bangalore or Mumbai, stay overnight at the airport, then travel to Mangalore. I hope the airline companies do something about us who live in south east asia! Our flights reach in the nights. There are convinent flights to kochi, but no connecting ones to mangalore. I hope even though direct flights to SE Asia is not possible, atleast help us by having connecting flights at convenient times to Bangalore, Kochi and chennai

Don't blame him for your mistakes. Please ask MCCI for Moily's contributions to Mangalore.Don't forget he represented Karkala for 3 Decades in Karnatak assembly,if he did nothing to Karkala than people are responsible for their mistakes.

First of all congratulations for the takeoff of direct flight from Mangalore Dammam. Secondly Umesh P. Mangalore what do you mean by Quote" JPH and Khadhar both violating Poll code. EC must punish them and ban UT Khadar from contesting upcming poll" Unquote. You know these two gentlemen strive hard for the direct flight from Mangalore - Dammam and one of the association from Dammam invited them for the felicitation function so they travelled for this. For your kind information Mangalore Airport got International Airport Tag because of Shriman Jayaprakash Hegdeji only. You people will not digest good things done by some great politicians. Ratnakar..there is no need for civil aviation minister to attend all maiden flight take offs. Does the rail minister attends all maiden train journies? Or education minister attends opening of every new school? You guys just don't digest the presense of JP Hegde and UT Khader at airport and travelling by maiden flight. Just read the comments by one of the gentleman on this forum. These two politicians were invited by some association in KSA for felicitation and hence they are present at airport as airlines cannot land in their compound. If you don't know the contribution of these politicians, then better not talk about them.

A big boon for those who had to previously take the arduous us via route through Mumbai etc. in terms of time and trouble and economy!

It is a strange paradox that with the start of direct flight at the same time, a lots of small scale employees mostly from Kerala whose jobs are getting axed due to the latest labor rules will also have the advantage of getting deported to their homeland directly, but with sadness on their faces!! I remember those days in 80s when we used to travel from Dhahran to Mumbai (face those arrogant customs officers at Mumbai Airport),then travel to Santacruz Airport to catch a single flight at 6 am to Mangalore. If miss that flight means wait for next day!! All in all, a minimum of 12-15 hours we used to spend in transit from Dhahran to Mangalore. How lucky todays passengers who reach the destination in 4.5 hours. This could have happened long back, but for the foresightedness of our local political leaders !!

He works for the people and he deserves credit. Where as our BJP MP's are busy only to give hate speeches and gain votes. Recently, none of the BJP MP's or MLA's were present for one of the functions although place was reserved for them on stage. This is the worth of BJP MLA's and MP's.

It is not possible for Civil Aviation Minsiter or other Senior Cabinet Ministers to attend each and every function small/big at Airport. It is imperative that JP Hegde has taken the initiative for this flight and also many issues concerning NRIs of Twin dist and also Kasaragod dist.He is a rare leader who works sincerely without much fanfare.Pl understand that unlike our Mangalore MP he is well educated and cabable of taking up matters concerning public interest for redressal without any help.Even he dont need publicity for that.It is worth mentioning that he looks after the needs of twin dists with out any partiality. To know his simplicity have you seen him wondering in his constituency/Mangalore with batalions like others.Definitely not.So simple he is.Please get the facts without political bias before commenting.

Dear Swastik Shenoy,The man behind this project is not other than Sri J.P.Hegde MP from Udupi who is working silently for the betterment of twin districts Udupi and Mangalore. Our Mangalore leaders have no time to attend to these matters as they are busy in cutting bibbons, attending bus shelter inaugaration, attending kambalas, jathres, koli kattas etc.,Hence they are not seen here.Thank god we have one peoples leader Sri J.P.Hegde from Udupi to take care of.God bless him....
