Udupi, Karkala, Maravanthe panchayats bag PEAIS national award

Udupi, Apr 5: Udupi zilla panchayat, Karkala taluk panchayat and Marvanthe gram panchayat in Kundapur, have bagged the Panchayat Empowerment and Accountability Incentive Scheme (PEAIS), a national level award for the year 2012-2013.

Prabhakar Sharma (CEO) speaking to the media said that the award was given for accountability and work done at the district, taluk and gram panchayat levels.

The award will be presented at New Delhi  by the President on April 24 which will be known as ‘panchayat Raj Day’.

Financially, the award will be an encouragement. The award consists of Rs 40 lac for Udupi zilla panchayat, Rs 20 lac for Karkala taluk panchayat and Rs 14 Lac for Marvanthe gram panchayat, totalling Rs 84 lac for the district.

"For the first time, a single district will be awarded at all levels zilla, taluk and gram panchayat levels and the credit goes to the president and vice-president and members of the respective panchayats and the officials for their empowerment and accountability," he said.

"Education and health sectors have made an immense contribution. This award will bring enhance the sense of responsibility among the winning panchayats," he said.

The union ministry for rural development and Panchayat Raj examined the development and documents of various panchayats, after which they decided to give the awards to the Udupi, Karkala and Marvanthe panchayats.
