Mangalore, Apr 7: 'Amcho Sandesh', a Konkani monthly bulletin launched by Catholic Sabha in the year 1994, celebrated its 20th anniversary at Ruzai Hall in the city on Sunday April 7.

After inaugurating the programme, Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza said, “People should take an active part in social issues. Moreover, good reading and good thought should be promoted and propagated across the mass section of the society.”

On the special occasion, ‘Kusall Dukasar Haso’, a book comprising more than 428 comics, written by George Ligoury D’Souza, and ‘Zaglale’, a book consisting of more than 27 thought-provoking articles, written by Valli Bola, were released by Konkani writer Dr Edward Nazareth.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Nazareth said, “The desire for reading Konkani books and publications among the younger generation and children has come down. Due to the English syllabus, children especially find it hard to read the Kannada script which is used to write Konkani articles. Children today have gone far from literature.”

Commenting on the hard task of bringing out each edition of the magazine, Dr Nazareth said, “The task is as difficult as that of a mother delivering a baby. Collecting enough articles, advertisements, and post processing work in each edition, is not an easy task. ‘Amcho Sandesh’ should also work as a bridge between Mangalore and Udupi diocese.”

President of Catholic Sabha Nigel Periera introduced, convener Goerge Ligoury D’Souza welcomed, and secretary Flavy D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Jerry Niddodi briefed the history of ‘Amcho Sandesh’ as a print publication.

Former editors, publishers, senior writers, and contributors of ‘Amcho Sandesh’ were felicitated on the occasion.

Earlier in the day, resource persons Gabriel Vaz, senior journalist, Ronald Fernandes, bureau chief, Deccan Herald, Mangalore, and Hemacharya, editor-in-chief, Daijiworld Weekly, spoke about journalism and its importance in the present society. Each lamented that the interest among the Christian community to get into the field of journalism was comparatively low.
