Prakash Veigas (survivor)

The two friends along with another friend, identified as Prakash Veigas (19), an electrician, went to the temple pond for a swim at around 2.30 pm. It is said that while they were playing in the water, Athwin and Roshan, who were not very adept at swimming, lost balance and fell in, and were washed away.

Prakash who swam to safety raised an alarm and locals gathered at the spot. The fire personnel were also called and after a search of 45 minutes, the bodies were recovered.

Athwin was the president of ICYM, Farla church. He was a student of ITI in KPT, Bantwal.

Roshan was a second PU student of Deepika college, Modankap.

Thanks Robin L for your feedback, this makes a little more sense now.
Anitha pinto why all the caps in your sentences when you are addressing to me? caps online=yelling, FYI I am not deaf. You are in Australia, I would expect you to be more open to ideas, FIRE/WATER/AIR tragedies are a-plenty, doesn't mean we accept the risk and do nothing to protect people's lives!!!, if such a mishap occurs in Australia your stand on this would’ve shocked people, seriously are you supporting “no investigation!”
Tell me, what is really wrong in investigating what happened here? No-one is suffering like these parents, who must be today wishing someone had done something more to save their children.
Maybe these boys lives could not be saved, but the findings from an investigation could potentially save future young lives from going through a similar tragedy. If the findings state depth of this pond, was the cause for this tragedy, then rails should be put in place, notices around the pond prohibiting swimming in the area.
There are also a number of valid suggestions here about teaching children swimming while they are young, I absolutely agree.
Thank you Daiji, for this article. Hopefully, something more can be done to prevent these tragedies from occurring in the future.

First of all my Heartfelt condolences to the family who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident.I had been to this place many a times with my family & friends. This pond is very clean and the surrounding is green & beautiful which is filled with serenity & tranquility , water flows 365 days of the year and it is the right spot for the picnic.During the ritual time devotees men women & children take bath in this pond. The water of the same pond is pumped upward towards the temple for drinking but no incident of sickness or any kind of decease has been recorded.I heard many stories from the local people, even I heard them saying the pond is so deep the depth of it is still unknown. But I never heard so far anyone is saying that someone is died while taking bath in this pond. But one thing that I can definitely tell this pond is not a swimming pool where you can learn swimming, no one swims here people only take bath and that too at the pond steps. We can not do much about the lost life other than praying for their soul. But definitely this tragic incident has shown us we need to be more cautious next time.

Being born and brought up in coastal area, when we were child we were never allowed to go near the beach or pond or river.A strict NO NO.
Because of this we never learnt swimming. Those days there were no swimming pools.
Now a-days ,there are many swimming pools in cities.I request all parents of to program the mind of thier children in this way till they provide a professional swimming training.Schools also may provide such training.

Very sad event indeed! Lost two precious young men. May their souls rest in peace. Deep condolences to the respective family members.

Apparently, this pond is being regularly visited and used by the public and I simply do not understand why safety measures like fencing of the dangerous area or the adequate warning signs have not been put in place by the concerned authorities.

Almost every day we hear that so many deaths are taking place due to drowning, and it is time that all schools and colleges introduce compulsory swimming lessons and make facilities available, so that the young and the old, are capable of handling fatal cases like this. Parents also should take equal responsibility in teaching swimming to their children at an young age.

I have raised this important issue through the Daijiworld columns before, and would like to stress again the importance of learning swimming at an early stage.

First my condolences sympathies to the family members who have lost their loved one(s). Indeed a tragic incident.
I am visiting this temple since my childhood, but never dared to get into water above knee level. Pilgrims who come to temple take bath with utmost caution. Water level is so deep and stagnant that make swimming tiresome.

Some years back, few youngsters have who came on picnic had met with similar tragic incident(2 or 3 youths drowned).
To avoid such incidents occurring in future, fencing of this pond is necessary

Sympathies to the parents of both families. Maybe they should investigate further, "I agree with Althaf, Kaup/Doha Why did they go swimming, when they didn't know to swim?" and how do 2 grown up boys, just fall into a pond? we are not talking about 10 year old kids here. And it is said "they were not very adept at swimming" but means they knew to swim, at least enough to float and not sink. If one slips and falls into a pond, a base level swimmer, would kick with all his strength to reach that last step to grab, right? the survivor had to just toss in his pant or shirt to pull them up.. there are no waves to pull one back either...this is so strange.
