Mangalore, Apr 12: Muneer Ahmed, who was arrested recently in a theft case and lodged in the district jail, was allegedly beaten up by Rashid Malbari and two other jail inmates.

The incident occured inside the jail here on Friday April 12.

Sources said that the crime branch police had been visiting the jail on a regular basis, and Muneer, who is a former police informer, had been reportedly passing them information about the happenings in the jal.

Angered over this, Rashid Malbari along with Madoori Subbu and Hyder allegedly thrashed him.

An injured Muneer was taken to Wenlock hospital and admitted there.

Muneer was arrested by the Kadri police on March 26 for stealing computers and other electronic equipment from various places in the city. He had been a police informer but had turned against the police later, alleging a police officer of collecting hafta through him and torturing him.

Rashid Malbari, known to be a notorious gangster, has been in the jail since 2009.

Anything can happen in Mangalore with Police and jail inmates...This special appearance of Muneer to Mangalore jail could be a wild card entry by the police itself to trap and track the Rashid element. The Mangalore Police are specialized in so called ‘fixing’ so people like Muneer are in and out very often. The T-shirt and Shoes distribution matter of Palemar at Mangalore jail is wider than this tussle but not highlighted by the media. The Police should give protection to inmates because there is no protection when you are out at public and in the entire country jail is the only safe place.
