Update: April 22

Mangalore, Apr 22: In connection with the incident in which a woman who was hit by a car was injured, and group clashes erupted thereafter, Congress candidate from Mangalore constituency, U T Khadar, and BJP candidate, Chandras Ullal, have requested people not to politicize the incidents for selfish ends. They have appealed to the residents of Ullal to prove through restraint and peace that Ullal is a land of religious harmony and that no one is allowed to vitiate this atmosphere.

They were reacting to a call given by bus drivers operating in Ullal region to stop plying buses in the region on Monday April 22 as a mark of protest. They have requested people not to lend an ear to rumour mongers and not take law into their hands for flimsy reasons.

The taxi driver who was driving his vehicle towards his beach has been identified as Ganesh from Ullal Mastikatte, and the woman who was injured, was Khateejamma (48). After a group present at the spot assaulted Ganesh, he called his friends over phone.  His friends then attacked Habib (27) from Mukkacheri, it is said. Habib is being treated in a private hospital in Tokkottu.

The policemen have also arrested Mustafa and Hanif from Belma, for thwarting them from filming the gangs involved with the protests. The act in which buses came under attack, is said to be an attempt made by habitual offenders to encash the opportunity provided by the volatile atmosphere.

Mangalore, Apr 21: Trouble broke out near Ullal beach here on Sunday April 21 evening after a car reportedly hit a woman leading to hurling of abuses, clashes and stone pelting.

It is said that a woman was walking along the Ullal beach road with her two children, when a car passing by allegedly hit her. The car came to a stop a little distance away.

The woman who was hit is said to have screamed, at which the locals gathered at the spot. Arguments arose between the woman and the driver, who is said to have even abused her, thus worsening the matter. Another source said that the car driver allegedly eve-teased the woman which sparked the trouble.

The issue snowballed into a clash between two groups and spread quickly. One person identified as Habeeb was injured.

The angry mob pelted stones at two buses. Their drivers, Loknath and Iqbal were admitted to Netaji hospital.

Sources said that the mob also gathered at the Ullal police station demanding quick police action. It is said that when the police recorded a video of the mob, some of the protestors snatched the camera from the police. Two persons have been reportedly taken into custody.

With police intervention, the situation cooled down by night. However, tight security has been deployed in Ullal, with even BSF men guarding the area. Vehicles passing by Ullal are reportedly being checked.

A case has been registered in Ullal police station.

Those who say that 'eve teasing' won't occur because the women is in her 40s obviously don't know what is happening in this country. A top cop in the UP was recently suspended for making a similar statement when a woman complained or rape. It was roundly criticised (and correctly so) as a very insensitive statement to make. That doesn't mean this allegation is true or vice versa. It only means people needn't be so pathetically insensitive and misogynist

I am from same area (Deralakatte, Thokottu) I know very well about locals if any mistakenly vehicle hits any human or animal people simply beating driver why? just hand over to police and file case against him instead of beating and damaging public property, I know some drivers are very careless on road but nobody want to kill pedestrian. Whenever please don't see religion just check who is wrong and hand over to police. I hope all is well.

False allegations of eve teasing and snactching of camera from police are dangerous tendencies.

All these tendencies should be rooted out so that we can feel safe in our own land.

Looking at the pics. it seems like a communal tension which is normal in sensitive ares like Ullal, Suratkal etc. during election time. But nobody in Mangalore will Eve tease an old lady, this may be possible in UP or Bihar. At least educated readers of DW can refrain from giving colorful comments.

    @ Fazal,
I thought there were eve teasers
who did eve teasing. A driver who did something which has been classified as 'Eve-Teased' is novel indeed. You don't call a 5 year old a girl Fazal you call her a Child.
You call a 42 year old an 'Eve' Okay ...Then this driver eve teased
,wanted a stroll in the garden ,and wanted to eat the forbidden apple...Satisfied?

Like I am say saying now and laughing my head off. One must be able to see through the 'balls' these days to get a clear picture! Really!
