Udupi: Rape backed by false promise of marriage - youth sentenced

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Apr 23: An accused, who was charged with repeatedly raping a young lady by making her believe in his promise of marriage, and then breaking his promise, has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by the district and sessions court here.

District and sessions judge, Narendrakumar B Gunaki announced the quantum of sentence in the case on Monday April 22. While Raghuram (41), a resident of Moodabettu in Shankarpura Shivananda Colony, who was the main accused, has been found guilty, his father, Aithappa, who was the second accused, was  absolved of the charges made against him.

The lady said Raghuram, whom she knew, approached her in March 2009 when waiting for a bus to reach her uncle’s home in Shankarpura at Udupi bus stand, and offered to drop her in his car. However, he took her to a new building in Karkala where he was conducting painting work. There, he offered her drink laced with some drug. After she fell unconscious, he reportedly raped her. When the lady protested after coming to senses, he threatened her not to reveal the incident to anyone, and also promised to marry her.

She was later escorted to various places by Raghuram. When she became pregnant, he convinced her to abort the pregnancy. Later, he allegedly refused to fulfill his promise of marriage. When the lady and her family members approached Raghuram’s family in this connection, Aithappa and others refused to entertain them, tried to assault them, and posed threat of murder, the lady had said in her complaint.

Public prosecutor, T S Jithuri, had presented the case on behalf of the prosecution. The then police circle inspector, S V Girish, had conducted inquiry and filed charge sheet in the court.

This story is quite fabricated instead of real !! when she was waiting for bus to go to uncle's house how she got into some one stranger's car??? she is saying he served her some drinks with laced drug in Karkala’s house ? she was normal till she entered the house of Karkala ? she does not know the route of her uncle's house and the so-called house of Karkala ? Why that lady did not complain in the first episode only? Why she keep quite from 4 years without complaining? Why she aborted her pregnancy ?? If i am not mistaken this not a rape this is just consensual sex. We need the law like death sentence for the rapists but what type of law we need such type of girls??

Disgusting! Why she had to wait till she concieved? Why didnt she complained in the beginning? We have to discipline our kids today.. so, a lawyer or a prison guard won't have to..later!

Govt. should give permission to legal red light areas(brothels)in all cities & towns. sex workers will fulfill the men's needs. Then rape cases will be decreased and decent women / girls can live safely.

Teach your children in school early age about sex and going with a stranger. Even though they give you free ride/chocolate or promise to marry.....do not go with them. Every one has a cell phone call family/friend/neighbor or police and get help. Mostly parents has to teach the children specially in villages.

    Hello Everyone, please read below:
He took her to a new building in Karkala where he was conducting painting work. There, he offered her drink laced with some drug he reportedly raped her. When the lady protested after coming to senses, he threatened her not to reveal the incident to anyone, and also promised to marry her.

This means first time he raped her, only after he promised to marry they had consetual sex.

Distance between Udupi to Shankerpura is 15kms and Udupi to Karkala is around 50 kms. You will have to cross shankerpura and then go to karkala. was she dreaming the entire way..?

So Ms. Veena, you the first time they met was rape and the rest were consensual.. lol there is a height for stupidity by that girl.
this case is nothing but love affair went wrong..

We have the strange laws and system in our country. "Rape a girl then marry her the culprit will be free" what a nonsense..

same thing happened with the Delhi minor girl rape case. if the rapist was punished the first time he would't have dared to commit the same crime again. infact he would have been in jail and the small girl would have been safe playing somewhere.. what a pity..

You know that, what she is saying is a joke....like everybody else....now this despot Raghuram will spend few years in prison at tax payers expenses if he is poor and could not go for appeals....and Halappa is contesting election again....

There a lot of influence on you too Mr. Nayak the trouser and shirt are also a western influence on you , for that matter we Indians used to wear only Katcha and Coat (do you remember seeing this in Malgudi)

For that matter the computer that you are using to send your comments was a gift of western culture. Admit it that we are all influenced for that matter to some extent.

I think Sujith Nayak read this case in English as "RAPE" that's why he said 'Western Culture' If he read this in kannada as "AATHYACHARA, BALATKARA" he would have wrote as 'INDIAN CULTURE'.

Sex on the promise of marriage is not Rape , its high time apex court give verdict in favour of defence. All that man had is consented relationship , and women went scot free. As equality in genders , why its men only being nailed. I hope the he has enough resources go to higher court against this verdict . Person the court thinks a criminal is been a victim here and its very sad such cases piling up.

So, our beloved Politicians can be punished with imprisonment for making false promise in their election manifesto and ignore or forget to fulfill the same after their winning. So, we need 224 Air conditioned Jail Rooms with all modern facilities on urgent basis to accommodate all our forthcoming MLAs’ who makes unimaginable and impossible promises without fearing for any consequences. And next year we need another 544 Jail Rooms for our beloved MPs’ too. Moral of the story is “Never make any promise to anybody”

Amma ! Sharanu.... So I will not comment....
    5. Even if she was in love with someone who was from a different class, even if she went to his place at night In NO WAY does this justify MURDER. This is similar to blaming the Delhi victim for her own rape. BLAME the ACT, not the VICTIM.

Taking a ride from a stranger in the first place is itself a stupidity. Secondly, why the lady did not object him while taking her to a place where her intention is not to go there. She could have raised alarm, if she was forced and the guy acts against her will. Therefore, the story is one sided and cant just blame the guy totally for the incident. The lady is egually responsible for the mess.

First of all why did she entered car of a stranger..?? Why again and again she visited stranger..if once she fall in trap..?? something is missing in between..!! when things go wrong..she blamed the stranger..earlier everything went normal..!! Both to be blamed..and are beyond lust..!! If they are really in 'love' nobody will touch one another before marriage..that's called 'pureness'..it even won't enters into the mind...
