Kundapur, Apr 25: Panic struck residents of Barekattu, here, after a high tension wire snapped and fell over a field of dry grass and caught fire. The incident occured at Hanumanthanagar here on Thursday April 25 at around 2.30 pm.

It is learnt that the high tension wire was passing over the field. Fire broke out and spread across the vast field. It spread over half acre land and caused momentary panic among the residents.

Fire brigade personnel immediately rushed to the spot and managed to put off the fire. No damage has been caused. The residents cooperated with the fire personnels in putting off the fire.

The residents alleged that negligence of Mescom in not changing the worn out electricity poles had caused the fire. "If bills are not paid on time the officials come to our door steps. But when electric wires break they remain silent," they complained.

The residents threatened to stage massive protest if immediate measures are not taken up to avoid such incidents from recurring.
