Kolkata, Apr 26 (IANS): Amid the political and financial crisis over the Saradha Group chit fund scam, West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan Friday said indemnifying the poor investors was imperative.

"There are several inquiries that are going on, but the most important issue now is: Can we give back some money to the investors," Narayanan told mediapersons here.

The chit fund driven company went bust after collecting money from lakhs of unsuspecting depositors. Company chief Sudipta Sen has been arrested and is being prosecuted for cheating.

Sen who had fled the state before being arrested from Jammu and Kashmir, had written to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying several high profile Trinamool Congress and Congress leaders were complicit in his activities. His 17-page letter has resulted in much political bickering.

The Mamata Banerjee government has set up a Rs.500 crore corpus to refund some of the money to the marginal investors.

The state government has also constituted a commission to probe the matter, and a public interest litigation has been filed seeking a CBI probe.

Both the Congress and the Left Front have been vociferous in their demand that investigations into the scam be handed over to the county's premier investigation agency.
