Srinagar, Apr 27 (IANS): Four policemen were killed Friday in north Kashmir's Baramulla district after being lured into a village on false information.

A senior police officer told IANS here: "At about 5.20 p.m. today (Friday), police post Putkhah in Sopore town received phone calls from some villagers of Hygam village that some suspects who looked like thieves were roaming in the village."

"On receiving the information a police party headed by a head constable was deputed to the village. While getting down from their vehicle in the village, the policemen were ambushed and fired upon by terrorists with automatic weapons," the officer said.

"All the four policemen were killed on the spot. They include a head constable, a constable and two special police officers (SPOs)".

Kashmir Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Ghani Mir rushed to the spot with other senior police officers to supervise an operation against the militants responsible for the attack.

It appears that the militants escaped after the attack.

The attack has come a week after police arrested a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander identified as Fahadullah, belonging to Multan in Pakistan from the area.

On the disclosures made by the arrested guerrilla commander, security forces had killed another guerrilla hiding in an orchard in the area.
