Belgaum, Apr 29: The police have found that the case in which the body of a 20-year old fourth semester student of the government degree college here was found in a farm in Sulebhavi village, about 20 km from here, was not related to either gang-rape or communal hatred as thought earlier. The girl was raped, killed by smashing her head and the word ‘Maratha’ was etched on her thigh by her lone killer.
The police arrested a person named Baswant Yadawad (33) from Benchinamaradi village in Gokak taluk in the district. The police now claim that Yadawad had raped and killed the girl, and had written the name of a caste on her body to mislead the police into believing that it was an act backed by hatred towards a caste.
The murdered student was engaged to marry the accused, who works as a LIC agent. The engagement ceremony had been held about a year back. Baswant often pleaded with the girl for pre-marital sex, and the girl refused, it is said.
After the girl came out of the examination room on Friday, Baswant roamed around the city in her company till 8.30 pm. He then took her in his motor bike in the guise of dropping her off in her village, but instead, tried to have sex with her after reaching Sulebhavi village. As his would-be wife stoutly resisted his advances, he got angry, and in a fit of rage, murdered her, and tried to give the hue of casteism to the incident, said district superintendent of police, Sandeep Patil.
