Mangalore: Unidentified bikers kill truck driver, rob two

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 30: In a strange incident which occurred at Bykampady Industrial Area in the outskirts of the city on Monday April 29 morning, two miscreants, who arrived in a motor bike not bearing any registration number, robbed two truck drivers who had parked their vehicle there, and murdered another one, before fleeing.

Gangadhar and Basavaraj had parked their trucks near Hassan Haji Garage on Monday morning, when they were approached by two youths in a motor bike. They reportedly threatened the drivers by wielding the knives, and robbed Rs 2,700 in cash, apart from their mobile phones.

At around 4.15 am on Monday, the same persons had attacked Ismail, a New Delhi-based truck driver, who was sleeping after parking his truck near CPC Logistics in Bykampady Industrial Area. They were running away after snatching away his mobile phone and cash, when Ismail shouted for help. The assailants grew nervous, and stabbed Ismail in the chest, before speeding away in their bike. Other truck drivers came running for Ismail’s help, but he breathed his last before he could be admitted into a hospital, it is learnt.

It is suspected that the robbers had inkling that drivers of trucks transporting coal to the port here normally hold large amount of cash. The assailants have targetted drivers, who sleep in the open without any security, as they become soft targets. Such incidents have also occurred in the past, and the drivers and other labourers who are alone at night in Bykampady have become a worried lot now because of these incidents.

It is so sad that the young truck drivers who toil hard for a living are attacked by the jobless youth of our region.
The culprit should get the most severe punishment and there should be security for such helpless truck drivers.

Mangalore is in news for all wrong reasons in recent times. It is sad that these kinds of incidents are happening within the city limits which are considered safer than the outskirts. Police has to wake up from their sleep and stop acting as servants of the rich and political class. Even public need to be more vigilant and report all suspicious activities to the concerned authorities. The general trend across India is that, people fear to approach law enforcing agencies including Police.
