Krishnan's friend Nawaz (28), also a resident of Chattanchal, has been taken into custody.

Krishnan and Nawaz were said to be close friends.

Two bottles of beer, a water bottle and a plastic bag were recovered from the crime spot. It is suspected that the crime may have been committed at around 3 pm on Wednesday May 1.

The locals noticed them coming out of a hotel with a food parcel at around 1 pm on Wednesday.

It is said that the friends had a quarrel over a loan of Rs 50,000 that Nawaz had given Krishnan a year ago. During interrogation, Nawaz is understood to have told the police that Krishnan had taken the loan for his sister's marriage.

On Wednesday, when Nawaz, allegedly in a drunken stupor, demanded that Krishnan pay back the money. This led to a quarrel between them, ultimately resulting in Nawaz strangling Krishnan to death with a handkerchief.

Krishnan was a bachelor and was working as a coolie.

The body was taken to Periyaram Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
