Railway Minister Bansal's nephew held for accepting Rs. 90 lakh bribe

New Delhi, May 4 (PTI) : In a huge embarrassment for the UPA government, the CBI on Friday arrested railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s nephew for accepting Rs. 90 lakh in bribe from a senior railway officer seeking “a lucrative posting”.

Senior agency officials said Bansal's nephew V Singla was arrested in Chandigarh for accepting the money from one Manjunath, an alleged middleman for railway board member (staff) Mahesh Kumar.

Kumar was arrested at the Mumbai airport soon after he arrived from Delhi. He allegedly wanted the position as member (electrical), which falls vacant on July 1.

“The new post would have given him the power to influence advanced signalling and telecom contracts worth Rs. 2,300 crore,” a CBI officer, who didn't wish to be identified, said.

The deal was allegedly struck for Rs. 2-crore and Rs. 90 lakh was the first instalment.

The railway board is the highest decision-making body of the Indian Railways. Bansal was unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts by HT to contact him.

Manjunath, who appeared to have “mobilised the money” on behalf of Kumar, has also been named in the FIR along with one Sandeep Goyal.

No knowledge about bribe, says Bansal

New Delhi, May 4 (IANS):
Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal Saturday claimed that he was innocent, and had "no knowledge or clue" about the bribe that his nephew, Vijay Singla, had allegedly taken for fixing a top level position in the government.

Bansal, denying any wrongdoing from his side, said he had no business relations with his nephew, nor did he have any financial transactions with him.

In a statement, Bansal said he had "no knowledge or clue about the matter at all". He said his relatives "cannot meddle in my official function or influence my decisions".

The minister claimed he had always observed the highest standards of probity in public life, and looked forward to an "expeditious investigation by the CBI in the matter".

Bansal's nephew Singla and three others, including a railway official, were Friday night booked by the CBI in the bribery case.

Singla was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.90 lakh from a member of the Railways Board who wanted a better position.

The minister has denied involvement.

Originally I am from Karnataka and I am a proud Indian. When I was small I studied that Indians fought for independence from them because British were taking the Indian wealth to their country. When BJP ruled my Karanataka , they were not taking any thing to their country but they were illegally exporting from Mines to other countries. Please let me know who is bad i.e. British or our own people?.

I dont think there is any need for the BJP or any other party supporters to feel very excited.
The BJP is dancing today because they feel that because of the Congress's corruption this is their golden chance to bring in their communal politics.
However remember that corruption is deeply entrenched in India in almost every sphere of life be it the government (central/state),education,healthcare,airlines,railways,municipalities,corporations,passport office, police administration, civil services etc..
The Media are now active in targeting mainly the central government because that is where they will receive maximum attention/viewership for their ratings etc. Therefore, just because others in other parties have not got caught as yet does not mean that corruption is not happening there.
Tomorrow if another government comes at the centre the story will not be much different. You can count on that. In fact we may have to deal with other demons too in addition to corruption.
I am not condoning corruption all I am saying is that no party can claim the moral high ground.
We need to defend the truth. Politics comes later.

All the politicians i.e. Congress/BJP/Trinimal/Jd/bsp/BJD or any, they are asking CBI investigation. The Party must make a rule that CBI is running on tax payers money that they must investigate from your money not on tax payers money and you are only stand for election if you are cleared from your criminal activity. At present most of the MLA's having 10 20 criminal cases against them. The people of India are giving votes on their False promises and on religion basis.

rightly said. Real embarrassment to UPA. They could have rounded up the 1st installment to at least 1 crore. Anything less than that (90 lacs) is real embarrassment to the UPA govt. UPA has set high standards and no palce for lakhs whether full of installment.

I heard Bansal is good minister, Now he has prove that he is good by taking responsibility of the same and resign his job. When your family member i.e. even wife ,children or family member involved than to escape from that he will tell that I don't have relation with them is really cheating.
