Udupi: Kaup slips out of BJP’s hands, Sorake wins

Udupi, May 8: Kaup constituency, which showed early leaning towards the BJP during the counting of votes since today morning, tilted towards the Congress in later stages, before falling into its lap finally. Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MP, who was facing stiff competition from two-time MLA, Lalaji R Mendon of the BJP, and former minister and JD(S) candidate, Vasant Salian, emerged victorious with a slender margin.

The constituency had been mostly held by the Congress till 2004, when it went to BJP with the victory of Lalaji R Mendon. Mendon also successfully defended his post in 2008 election. This time around, Vasant Salian, who tasted two successive defeats, was hoping to get Congress ticket again. He had claimed that the party leadership had assured him a ticket, but at the last minute, the Congress chose to field Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Angered by this act and terming it as last minute betrayal by party leaders, Vasant Salian resigned from Congress and succeeded in securing the ticket of JD(S). But Salian could get only 3,162 votes against 42,282 of the BJP and 43,417 of the Congress. The constituency, with this result, has come back to the Congress after about nine years, in tune with such trend witnessed in most parts of the state.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU MR.SORAKE. IT IS ONLY YOU COULD DO IT IN KAUP.IN MY COMMENTS IN THIS COLOUM I DID WRITE,"IF THE TICKET IS GIVEN TO MR.SALIAN,CONGRESS IS GOING TO LOOSE IN KAUP.PEOPLE OF MOODUBELLE,PANGALA, SHIRVA, MOODARENGADY,PADUR ETC MAY NOT VOTE FOR SALIAN.THEY HATE HIM FOR HIS ARROGANT NATURE".PEOPLE OF THIS AREA HAVE EXPERIENCED THE GOOD SOFT HUMBLE NATURE OF SORAKE IN THE PARLIMENT ELECTION.I AM 100% SURE KAUP WILL SEE A VERY GOOD PROGRESS.MR.SALIAN IS GIVEN A NICE UNFORGETABLE TREATMENT BY THE PEOPLE OF KAUP.HE CAN HAVE A PEACEFULL RETAIRMENT.

Stunning last minute magic by Sorake. Mendon was the likely winner but electorate have rejected the communal BJP. Salian too has shown his final place. All credit to Kapu Voters. Well done.

Congratulations Vinaykumar Sorake. Wish you will keep up the faith reposed by the people in you by devoting your time for the constituency.

What a tragedy for Vasanth Salian. He could not muster even 4,000 votes from Kaup. That means he was winning only because of Congress factor earlier.

I applaud the efforts of previous MLA in developing the infrastructure in and around Kaup. I hope you will continue the goodwork

Congratutations Mr Sorake. You rightly deserve this victory.....

Only Sorake could wins this seat because on one hand he had to face sitting BJP MLA and other hand the REBEL but he successfully dealt with the both showing his power.....

This is not just the victory of congress but also the victory of SORAKE

    Dear Mr Simple

Thanks for good gesture and in fact I am speechless after seeing results as DK/UDUPI gone as I predicted more or less 95% correct.I had optimistic about Mr Sorake even those he swam against the current. He is an great leader in fact his second innings in politcs just take off in a style. In is own capacity he brought Shakku akka and she romped home and also Vinayanna himself. In fact Puttur victory is a sweet revenge against DVS and voters of Puttur respected V.Sorake's ion.

What I fail to understand is being away from home sitting in deserts(as BJP alleges me)we can gage the pulse of people then how can't DINESH POOJARI LIKE educated people not able understand!!!!

Dear simple,I like your comments always as simple as you.Keep writing ...Keep entertain us in a positive as you do...

    Congrats to Mr Sorake.

How is Salian?? Is he cool? Has he conceded his utter defeat and lost his deposit?? He said in his compaign that his first motive is to defeat Sorake but got himself defeated by the people and lost his deposit...what a pity. Its peoples adalat and voters are the judges and salian cant be a judge in a democracy like ours....Salian is nobody as far as congress is concerned and he cud not dent the party. Its good that he himself left the party and he has done a favour to congress as many a voters didnt like him at all
