Mangalore: Coastal voters snub BJP, jubilant Congress celebrates victory

Mangalore, May 8: During the last five years, the voters of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have undergone a change of heart, going by the results of the assembly election held on Sunday May 5. Although the BJP appeared to have been prepared for some reverses, and bad news, the extent of drubbing has apparently shocked its workers and leaders.

Both the districts had been strong bases of the Congress party in the post independence era, although there were a few exceptions. There was a time when the then PSP and Swatantra party had won seats. In the last couple of decades, There had been a recognizable support to the BJP, although the efforts of JDS, SP, BSP etc to gain a foothold here failed.

In the 2008 election, for example, BJP had won eight out of the 13 seats in the twin-districts with the remaining five going to the Congress. This year however, the voters have chosen 11 Congress candidates, giving the balance two to the BJP. It may be noted that Puttur, which had been a BJP bastion, has fallen to the Congress, while Sullia continues to be retained by Angara of the BJP against general expectations.

With the victory of Congress candidates, Khadar from Mangalore, and Ramanath Rai from Bantwal, both the seats are retained by the sitting MLAs. Out of 13 constituencies, five MLAs have been able to retain their seats ie Mangalore, Bantwal, Sullia, Moodbidri, and Beltangady. Out of them,Sullia is the only constituency retained by the BJP, with the rest going to the Congress.

Two of the major victories for Congress came in the cities of Mangalore (South constituency) and Udupi. While newcomer J R Lobo defeated four-time BJP MLA Yogish Bhat comprehensively by a margin of 12,275 votes, Pramod Madhwaraj scored a massive victory over BJP's Sudhakar Shetty, winning by a margin of over 39,000 votes.

There is allround jubilation in the Congress camp and victory processions are being held everywhere in the district. As before, no other party including JD(S) could make an impact on the electorate. Congress appears to have scored over the BJP because of the selection of better candidates, at least in some of these these constituencies, and the twin-districts are set to get two or three ministerial berths in the new ministry in the state.

Please accept this verdict with dignity AND HUMILITY without accusing any one or ridiculing any one. LAKHS OF SOUTH CANARA PEOPLE HAVE VOTED AGAINST BJP NOT JUST FOR CORRUPTION BUT FOR ATTACK ON CHURCHES,MORAL POLICING, HOME STAY ATTACKS ETC. IF THE BJP CADRE HAD USED THIS ENERGY TO LOVE THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CANARA FOR DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNAL HARMONY BJP WOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT AMONG ALL COMMON PEOPLE. Congratulations to the Congress candidates on your win to form the next Government, and commiserations to the BJP on your loss.

BJP, you yourself have to take the entire blame for your loss and poor performance, for you went wrong in quite a few areas, as you are well aware, the most three vital issues/policies being corruption, internal politics and fights, and most importantly, your improper handling of the communal violence, and your inability to restore peace, order and safe living atmosphere. You also completely neglected the district of South Kanara, when it came to providing essential utilities, good roads and infrastructure, and for creating new jobs and opportunities.

For Congress, while you have every reason to celebrate your victory and feel happy about it, you have a great job and a lot of hard work immediately ahead, and wish you well in your new role. Of course, the people have have spoken and let know their wishes by voting you in, and it is up to you to perform and strive to meet their expectations. Good luck!.

Congrats to all the winners from Congress party. One of the points I want to make here is that when people attacked the churches and pulled down the Blessed Sacrament these very BJP MLAs whom we elected did not do anything to punish the culprits, instead they supported police to charge sheet the innocent Christians and punished them. This insult and agony will never be forgotten by any. Those people who touched our Tabernacle and those supported them will not be left free because there is someone watching all that is done.

I hope the new MLAs in our Coastal Districts will work for the unity of society and bring harmony among people. Let us extend our full support to them to make good infrastructure work and develop our cities. Let us also support them to work for the welfare of all the people in our Coastal Districts. All the very best to one and all!!!!!!!!!

Notable charestic of this election result is that people at large are happy not because Congress has won but the dubious, corrupt, cunning, uncultured, betrayal BJP has shattered in pieces. This is just like celebration of deepavali in remebrance of demolision of destructive Narakasura.Narakasura is clearly is BJP in Karnataka. This is not victory for Congress party but they should thank BJP people who have forgotten the peoples welfare after assuming power.

In Mangalore they have embarked on all types of immoral things to defame J.R.Lobo and ultimately the truth prevailed and the result is before us.Let the new term of Congress in Karnataka learn lesson from BJPs humble defeat and usher in new dawn of develeopment, peaceful living for common people and creating more and more jobs for our youths in the district/state.At least now DK people can hope our own man from here will be Dist in charge minister unlike CTR an notorious from outside. Thanks to the people of DK who showed that Dist in Charge minstered can be produced here itself.....

So, corruption is not the factor to decide the Party to rule. Else Congress would not have won more than 40 Seats. It means our people love corruptions for day-to-day livelihood. Moreover by seeing the Karnataka Results, now I would prefer to support Corruptions in every level and start supporting for Congress too. But BJP too learned one lesson from Karnataka Results that do not throw away corrupt leader instead support them till the end, accumulate huge corruptions money for election time distribution among supporters so that they can retain the seats without any problem. Dear Jeevan, Dinesh, Nagesh and other BJP supporters, pls take some back seats for few days and let Congress Supporters enjoy their corrupt Party’s victory since Karnataka people have decided to support the most corrupt Party

They were not happy with the misrule which the BJP govt did in last 5 years. Now please come out with caste based politics and advise congies to work for the betterment of people. Otherwise the people will teach a lesson to congies in the next assembly election the way they did for BJP this time.

    by thumping majority.

Maturity of the People can be seen, for they had given fair chance to all the parties also.

Those who misruled are pushed to OPPOSITION bench with divided
mandate so that they shouldn't come on the way of good governance. Again Good maturity.

In suffering, people of the state have shown more enthusiasm to vote by large numbers and defeat rowdy characters in ruling.

Its clear message to BJP leaders that 'hardline Hindutva' will not work. In fact BJP leadership at the top is honest - However, they overlooked some delicate communal incidents which powered the local 'gundas' to act on their own as of its their private property. Spreading communal hatred will be counter productive and this election is a proof.
Having said that - Congress must work hard to retain the trust people have bestowed. It won't take more time for voters to decide otherwise. Its nice to see a BJP sit in the last bench of opposition and sulk.
