Sunil Kumar takes Karkala, Gopal Poojary wins Byndoor

Karkala/Kundapur, May 8: Though the BJP was trounced in a majority of the constituencies in the twin coastal districts in the Assembly election results announced on Wednesday May 8, it had something to cheer about with Sunil Kumar defeating Congress sitting MLA Gopal Bhandary.

Sunil Kumar won the Karkala seat by defeating Poojary by a margin of 4,274 votes.

Speaking to media persons, Sunil said, "I was expecting this victory right from the beginning. This win is dedicated to the party workers who strived hard for my success."

"I will seek guidance from my senior party leaders so that I lead efficiently and bring about more development in this region. A developed Karkala is my vision," he added.

"Gopal Bhandary lost the election because they compared the development work done by me and by Poojary as MLA for the last 10 years. The people here want development and hence they chose me," he said.

Meanwhile, in Byndoor, it was celebration time for Gopal Poojary who defeated his BJP counterpart Sukumar Shetty comprehensively by a margin of about 30,000 votes.

By winning this constituency, he broke the popular notion that 'a candidate from Byndoor, once defeated, never wins again'.

It was long a wait for the former MLA as he has not won for the last 40 years.

"This unexpected victory goes to our party workers. This victory is a proof of the faith the voters have put on me. I will sincerely work for their welfare and strive to fulfil their expectations. Development of this constituency is my priority," said Poojary.

    Ravi Kotian, you are questioning the wisdom of people from Karkala constituency who have voted and elected Mr. Sunilkumar by saying that it is useless for Karkalites. Probably, you have not seen the development work done by Mr. Sunilkumar in Karkala during the time from 2004 to 2008 when he was an MLA. Even 7 time MLA Mr. Veerappa Moily has not done that much of work for Karkala constituency though he was a Minister / Chief Minister for long. Perhaps, being in Padubidri, you have not had on occasion to witness the development work in Karkala during Sunil's time?

    If the opposition MLA represents a particular constituency, then the ruling party (this time Congress) will not sanction any funds for development of the constituency? What is the rationale? Does this mean that there should not be any development in those constituencies which are represented by opposition MLAs?

    Finally you have said, " The people must understand and go with the wave and not go by sentiments and religious emotions". What is that you talking about sentiments and religious emotions? Are people not free to vote as per their conscience? Sunil is a Hindu and represents BJP Party. Is voting for a Hindu candidate representing BJP Party is sin as per your view point?

    Sunil Kumars victory is not a big victory. Its a sharp balde walk vicotry. How come the voters of Karkala, being educated enough voted infavour of the most communual person of the century.. He is a leader of communual outfits and communual minded people. He is not the leader of masses. If he doesnt change his line of thinking and ideology, next election he shall be a history...

    Sunil Kumar's win is useless for Karkalites. The new Congress Govt. will not sanction any development projects for Karkala. The people must understand and go with the wave and not go by sentiments and religious emotions.

    Shree Gopal Poojari is down-to-earth person, whether he lost or win tried to stay in touch with common man. Of course successfully led the Udupi District Congress as a President.

    Karkala constituency has been sailing against the flow of waves.

    Last time, there was BJP wave in the state but in Karkala, Congress won!
    This time there is congress wave in the state but BJP won!
    This may be reason for less development in Karkala region.

    However, Mr. Sunil Kumar's views on minorities have changed from hardliner to moderate.
    This is welcome change for himself as well as people of the region.

    If a person has wide reach then he/she will have wider acceptance too.
