More Congress leaders jump into Karnataka CM race

Bangalore, May 9 (IANS): Ahead of Congress observers' arrival here for selection of Karnataka's new chief minister, the race for the post intensified with more Congress leaders wanting their names to be considered.

Siddaramaiah, who was leader of the opposition in the outgoing assembly, and central Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge remained front runners for the post, according to Congress sources.

The Congress Wednesday scored a clear victory in the assembly poll winning 121 seats in the 225-member house.

The newly elected legislators have been called for a meeting at the party office here for discussion with the central observers, state Congress chief G. Parameshwara said in a press statement.

The central observers would be led by Defence Minister A. K. Antony and would include former central minister Ambika Soni and Congress general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Madhusudan Mistry, party sources said.

They would ascertain from the legislators who is their choice for chief minister and brief Congress president Sonia Gandhi who will take the final decision.

On Thursday two former ministers who also held top posts in the state Congress unit - R. V. Deshpande and D. K. Shivakumar - said their services to the party should be taken into account while picking up the chief minister.

Shivakumar, a former working president of the state unit, tried to play his caste card also saying he comes from a community, Vokkaligas, which has contributed much to the growth of the Congress in the state.

He told reporters here that he has won the assembly election for the sixth time in a row and has experience and ability to carry various sections of the party with him.

Deshpande, a former state unit chief, was not as direct as Shivakumar to declare that his name be considered for the chief minister's post.

"If the party gives the responsibility I will carry it out," he told reporters in Bangalore.

Earlier in the day, pitching himself as the next chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said that all 120 of the party's newly elected legislators were with him.

"The observers will brief the party high command (on legislators' choice) which will take the decision," he told reporters at his residence here.

On the support he has among the legislators to become the chief minister, he said: "All 120 MLAs (members of the legislative assembly) are with me."

"I am a strong contender," Siddaramaiah had said Wednesday even as vote count was on and trends showed that the Congress was heading for a clear majority in the house.

Kharge had said Wednesday that if the high command thinks he was fit for the post, it was for it to take the decision. However, he had said he did not want to be considered because he is a Dalit.

Yes, Mr CHIDANANDA BANGALORE,you are right. In fact Mr Rai's name also included in the probable list of CMs which I focused in my earlier comments before election. In case of any disagreement with Siddu's name,I think it is remote under the circumstances, certainly Mr BAIBYANNA's name will emerge as Consensus! If Bavaka can get ticket and went on winning hot seat of Surthakal,it could be possible.

Where did Kharge come into teh picture? What are his contributions? He is a part of teh central government.

Was'nt it Siddaramaiah and Parameshwar who shouldered the responsibility to lead Congress?

Siddaramiah is a capable leader who has good financial knowledge of the state and has successfully presented the budget on several occasions.

Compared to Shivkumar & Deshpande Yadiyurappa was far far better.
Among present senior leaders of Congress, there are only Two Clean persons - they are Siddu & Kharge. all are no different from BJP men.
So Karnataka people do not wish to jump from fry-Pan to fire.

When there is good leader Mr. Siddaramaiah in the state and performed opposition leadership since from last 5 years also worked hard for the party There is no meaning of ing others name for the post of C.M. At present Mallikarjuna Karge is having central portfolio. As per my view Sidramiah is the best candidate for C.M. all cast calculation, here only see the merrits and capacity.

Kharge is most likely to become the CM. He has been loyal for close to 40 years and won all elections conteseted.Held all posts from KPCC president, union minsiter and several portofolios in the past Has a good support from all communities. Has more number of MLAS's then Siddu as supporters.Has the blessings of the high command.Favaorable to krishna, parameshwar, oscar, Deshpande and Moily.Siddramiah has done lot of work in this election and a lateral entry not well accepted outside old Mysore areas.

Congress needs a CM who can carry all sections together and lead the state. Any bravado or indifference would have an impact on the next parliament elections as well as next elections in the state. BJP would do all things possible to create confusion in the next five years probably with a vengeance to capture power. I think right now they are thinking about it -including creating communal tensions.
I personally feel that the Congress needs a statesman type of politician now or intellectual to lead.

Whatever the case may be but this position should not go to none of these three, namely Janardhana Poojary, Oscar Fernades and Virrappa Moily. They do not deserveto get this post. They have done least to Mangalore, Udupi and to surrounding areas of then DK when they were in power or still had a chance to contribute to people of their region.

Siddaramaiah should be made the Chief Minister. He is the one who started the pada yatre and has been the opposition leader for the last few years. In the worst case, the CM should be among the MLA's and should not someone who is a MP or MLC.

Mr. Siddaramaiah should be the Chief Minister of Karnataka State. He is very decisive, hard working, well disciplined, lot of knowledge, and much courageous. The bad image of Karnataka State, Politicians involvement in law & order department, transferring the officials, bribery events, crimes, and the gangs who is doing illegal stupid moral policing need to be eliminated right way. We need Mr. Siddaramaiah is strong will power man and he will surely success in these issues. Hope congress will make him as CM.

One who commits to Make Karnataka a Model State of India in all respects and has proven track record and has a ability to carry everyone along should be considered for the C.M.'s Post.
shouldn't be given on the basis of lobbying or demands.
No one is higher than the party in Congress.
No party is higher than the laws and Unity of the Country.

Not serious contenders...in fact, penetrating plum cabinet portfolios. It is 100% sure Siddu is number one serious contender for the coveted post.A clean image, non corrupt and friend of OBCs and a propagator of SOCIAL JUSTICE is apt for the post.
