New Assembly has more than 200 crorepati MLAs, average wealth Rs 23 crore

Bangalore, May 10 (PTI):
The average asset per MLA in the 2013 Karnataka Assembly elections is Rs 23.54 crore, a nearly 135 per cent increase compared to the previous 2008 poll, when it was Rs 10.02 crore, according to an NGO.

Karnataka Election Watch (KEW) also said today 93 per cent or 203 MLAs of the total 218 analysed are crorepatis. In 2008, 63 per cent MLAs were crorepatis.

KEW said it analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 218 out of the 223 newly elected MLAs.

It said 92 re-elected MLAs have been analysed. Their average asset in 2008 was Rs 17.53 crore, which has gone up to Rs 30.15 crore, a growth of 72 per cent.

The maximum growth in assets in the last five years has been for D K Shivakumar (Congress), who has declared an increase of Rs 175.9 crore -- from Rs 75.5 crore in 2008 to Rs 251 crore in 2013. Assets of Priyakrishna (Congress) has increased by Rs 143.36 crore -- from Rs 767.6 crore to Rs 910.9 crore and that of Santhosh Lad (Congress) by Rs 124.8 crore -- from Rs 61.5 crore to Rs 186.4 crore

KEW said 34 per cent or 74 of the 218 MLAs analysed have declared criminal cases against them, compared to 20 per cent five years ago.

Out of these 74 MLAs, 39 have declared serious criminal cases like attempt to murder, kidnapping, dacoity, assault against women etc. Five MLAs have declared that they have murder-related cases against them. 11 MLAs have declared that they have been charged under Prevention of Corruption Act.

Out of 218 MLAs, five (two per cent) are women in the new Karnataka Assembly, compared to three in 2008.

First talk of the house then we talk about other houses - other wise it is like that oldage saying "Dusranchya dollyanth kisall aslyari distha, apnachya dollyanth mussall aslyari disana"
First we will try to remove that 'Mussall' from our eyes so that we can see clearly and then go after those "Kisals" in others eyes.
    Operation successful

In India it will be never ending story. In this country one has to become politician or film actor or Cricketer or underworld to live happily. Frustrated, we have a choice to write our comments in "DAIJIWORLD" and digest our feelings. We are happy to see the ink mark we get on our finger nail after voting. Good old days for common man will never comes unless one more Gandhiji born

Now that we know that 200 MLAs' are crorepati, in years ahead, the public should be made aware of how much wealth each one will amass. The transparency should be maintained and their accounts shown in black and white, yearly, to the ones who put them in that place.

It only goes to prove the common belief that money power is essential to win elections. Let us only hope that they will not be driven by greed to amass even more in their new roles. For, after all how much can you take with you when you leave this earth?

It is very good that 200 out of 223 MLA's of the new Assembly are crorepatis.
Lets see how many are so socially conscious that they will forgo their salaries, their perks, etc and hire their own security guards (why they need them when just a few weeks ago they were ordinary citizens beats me) so that the savings for the Govt can go to the poorest of the poor or maybe to do up the roads which are in a horrible condition (excluding the roads that were being used by the BJP rajas that were concreted)

This is nothing. In previous BJP government each and every minister/MLA was crorepathis. Not only that after assuming power BJPs state level, dist level, taluk level functioneries,MPs ,RSS functioneries at various levels etc., have be ccomerorepathis. That was a great achievemnt by BJP government in a short span of time.Their next project was to make crorepathis each and every ordinary citizen of this state.Alas, we are ill fated citizens and lost a chance to become the target of their great project!Better luck next time.....
