Dubai : Konkani quiz finals and drama - On May 17

Media Release

Dubai, May 12: The majestic Sheikh Rashid Auditorium in Dubai is shortly going play host to a historic event that will go down as first-of-its-kind in the annals of Konkani-speaking community of UAE as well as other GCC countries.

The eagerly-anticipated finals of the first-ever Mega Konkani Quiz will be held at the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium on May 17, 2013 evening. Four teams representing four Mangalorean associations of UAE, that is, USWAS Shirva, Omzoorche Dive, Udentichi Neketram and Team Belle Vision, will be vying to reign supreme at the finals and be crowned as the first winners of first Konkani quiz contest. In way, it’s one rare event wherein the organizers, the participants and the audiences, all have a unique opportunity to be part of a historical beginning that might have a telling impact on growth, nurturing and spread of Konkani in the Gulf and Middle-East countries.

A moral social play ‘Shimti Nathlo Kolo’, written by Sunny D’Souza and directed by Sannu Monis, Belle will also be staged by members of Karaval Milan, thus providing a bumper bonanza to the Konkani lovers of UAE.

The Quiz competition will give a glimpse of the rich heritage and culture of Konkani. Famed compere, Konkani writer and orator par excellance Vincent Alva Pamboor will be the quiz master for the inaugural Konkani Mega Quiz.

About Vincent Alva:

Vincent Alva perhaps needs no introduction. He has carved a niche for himself not only among Konkani-speaking community but among all sections of undivided Dakshina Kannada district over the years as master compere, ace writer, champion orator and capable leader who has the knack of uniting and organising youth for a cause. The former member of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academi, Vincent Alva is a familiar face and much sought-after compere for weddings, music nites, corporate events in Udupi and Mangalore. He is a rare compere of Konkani origin who is equally adept and fluent in English, Kannada, Tulu as well as Hindi along with Konkani. An English professor by profession, he is darling teacher at Milagres College Kallianpur for long.

His contribution within the church as choir master, Catholic Sabha office-bearer, youth animator etc are also well-complimented as an able organizer, powerful orator and social activist outside the church compound. This is what makes him unique. He has strong bonds with religious, political as well as laity leaders of Konkani community and at the same time shares similar relationship and commends respect from other communities, especially from the youth section of the society.

Amidst all this one of his great talent that has rarely been appreciated is his penchant for writing and his capacity as author of several books, innumerable articles published in various Konkani, Kannada as well as English periodicals. He has also lent his voice to a few Konkani as well as Tulu songs and has even penned a few songs that have featured in various musical albums.

He will indeed be a special attraction and organizers are quite sure that he will have immediate and immense impact on Konkani Mega Quiz which is on its way to becoming a tradition soon just like the Gulf Voice of Mangalore. Karaval Milan, the creativity hub of UAE has come out with a novel event wherein just a plain Konkani speaking person can attain glory even if he/she is not a singer, dancer, actor or orator.

Amidst all these things another novelty of this event should not be missed. The proceeds of the evening will be contributed towards the training of talented and interested students from the Catholic community who are aspiring to be IAS, IFS and KAS officers. The newly-established Udupi diocese is chalking out plans to establish a special cell wherein students will be picked and provided with all the facilities in order to answer the UPSC exams. There is a serious dearth of bureaucrats from Catholic community in the state as well as central administration and hence the community has politically been sidelined.

The community has slowly but surely understood the need and the value of entering into public service as an honest and an upright bureaucrat can change the existing system and infuse dynamics into the stagnant administration.
