Mangalore, May 13: Activists of Bajrang Dal, who came across a case of illegal cattle trafficking, intercepted the traffickers, and handed over the vehicle and the cattle to the police. The incident occurred on Sunday May 12.

Three milk-yielding cows, and three calves, all of which are less than a year old, were confiscated along with the vehicle. Two occupants of the car including the driver, succeeded in running away.

Reportedly, four persons were returning after watching a Yakshagana performance at Adkar, to the city at around 3.45 am on Sunday, when a pick-up van overtook them at Naguri. As the passing vehicle gave away scent of cattle, the four friends, who were in two motor bikes, decided to follow the vehicle. The vehicle driver, who became conscious of the fact that he was being trailed, sped away on Kankanady-Falnir Road, but the people on the motor bikes succeeded in intercepting the vehicle near Indira Hospital. The driver and another person, who were in the vehicle, ran away after leaving their vehicle there.

After the four persons led by Pradeep Kumar informed the Pandeshwar police, the policemen came on the spot and took away the vehicle and cattle. Later, after obtaining permission of the court, the cattle were handed over to Govanitashraya Trust in Beejaguri. The fact that the cows were accompanied by calves, and that the cattle transporters took to their to heels when confronted, give an indication that the cattle were stolen.

A case stands registered in Pandeshwar police station. Investigation has been taken up.
