Kundapur: Footwear godown gutted in fire, loss runs into several lacs

Kundapur, May 13: An accidental fire got ignited in a godown used for storing footwear located in the second floor of Vaishali Complex at Shastri Circle here on Monday May 13 morning.
The fire, which started at around 7 am today in the godown, where reportedly fresh consignment of sandals and shoes brought for use during rainy season had been stored, spread fast.
‘Padukalaya’, a popular retail showroom selling footwear and owned by Mohammed Ghouse, functions from the ground floor of the same building. The loss inflicted by fire runs into several lac rupees, owner of the show room said.
Kundapur police said they got information about fire at 9.15 am. By then it was too late, and the stocks in the godown had been completely burnt down. Four fire tenders, two from Kundapur, one from Udupi, and the other from Bhatkal, fought for two hours to douse the fire. Back up by way of two water tankers was also provided. The local people also helped the fire brigade personnel in the task.
A large number of people gathered around the building after news of fire spread. As a result, prolonged traffic block occurred on national highway. Traffic sub-inspector Imran, and his team members, plunged into action and paved way for smooth traffic in a short while.
Sub-inspector of police, Manjunath Kauri, was present. A case is yet to be registered at the local police station relating to the incident.
