Bangalore, May 13: Just as Siddaramaiah finished taking oath as the new chief minister of Karnataka on Monday May 13, one person at the venue suffered a massive cardiac arrest and passed away.
The deceased is Manjappa (50), a resident of Whitefield. He was originally from north Karnataka. Sources said that he was a Congress worker.
He collapsed near gate number seven while coming out after the function attended by nearly 50,000 Congress supporters from across the state.
Manjappa was rushed to Mallya Hospital, but was pronounced brought dead.
Soon after addressing the press meet, Siddaramaiah visited Manjappa's family at Mallya Hospital and expressed his sympathies.
He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lac for the kin of the deceased. The CM was scheduled to go home soon after the press meet, but instead took time to visit the family, after which proceeded home.
Another source said that Manjappa was a security man who had worked double shift during preparations for the swearing-in ceremony. As he was already a heart patient, he suffered cardiac arrest due to extreme stress, it is learnt.
"It could have been a massive heart attack but the actual cause of death will be ascertained only after the post-mortem is conducted", police said.
