Captain locked out of cockpit in Air India flight to Bangalore!

Mumbai, May 14 (IANS): An Air India New Delhi-Bangalore flight had to make an unscheduled landing at Bhopal after the flight commander was locked out of the cockpit, an airline spokesperson said here Tuesday.

The bizarre incident occurred Monday when the flight commander of AI-403 went to the toilet briefly and returned to find the cockpit door locked.

Despite all efforts from outside and inside by the co-pilot and a trainee pilot, the jammed door failed to open, leaving the flight commander outside.

The co-pilot took permission from ground control and diverted the flight to Bhopal where the aircraft landed safety at 5.55 p.m.

A ground team of maintenance engineers rectified the problem and the flight left Bhopal on its onward journey to Bangalore, reaching there at 10.30 p.m.

"All precautions and procedures regarding safety were observed during the entire process. The incident posed no danger to the aircraft passengers and the crew," an Air India spokesperson said.

Good that he was not locked in side the toilet, like it happened to one of the co-passenger who was flying from Doha to Mangalore & was locked in the toilet for 45 mnts. Then the crew has to break the door, any way beggars can't be choosers,we have only one direct flight & so jai ho.

Metro 2 drivers,Bus 1 driver/2 conductors, than unions etc. See you are from Dubai and our Dubai Metro with 50 stations without drivers and no accidents. How in India all will run i.e. Insurance, Police,Unions etc.

This is rediculous and silly.Whether the flights are not inspected properly before the departure seems to be doubtful. This is the matter of risking the life of so many passengrs.Hope, the authorites concen trace this neglegance and suitable action be taken on the defaulting staff. Please ensure that this type of risky incidents never occur again.Thanq.

It is domestic affair , if the flight is international route and in middle of the sea space what should the safety majority taken by AI, from before AI is a "Title of delay flight" so my humbly request to AI authority to check proper before flight take off.

Most probably the Captain of AIR INDIA flight to Bangalore must have gone to the toilet to take a short nap as no seats were available. Why this happens only with Air India. Last week both the pilot and the co-pilot took a nap in the first class seats leaving the air hostess and flight attendant to fly the aircraft on auto pilot mode.

Passengers are lucky to be alive. That is why people are making such statements. The rare question would be what when the plane wouldnt land safely. How would the story or version go.

Plane crashed whilst the pilot went for a pee and he couldnt open the cockpit door.

What would you think. In case of emmergency just knock on the door and if it does not open then just wait till after landing.

The4 fire brigade must also follow these rules.

    Jai Hind.

Dear Jostin R,I must correct you.unfortunately not only in India ,but only with Air India. sometimes flys away one tyre,.or on landing tyre flys and get someother nearby staying other planes or things get involved.once so happened here I heard. had a case for Long time. I dont know what happened later.thats why now Air India is landing bit outside.you have to have a good life Insurance when you fly our MaharaJa flight.

Rita Germany, I really do not get your point. I was referring to India because Air India is owned by Indians and so,they either do not have any strict regulations of inspecting the flight before it takes off, or the inspection team is really ineffiecient. Thats the whole reason behind this ignorance- which would result in a horrible mishap!

Its not that bizarre because it was an AI flight. What else could you expect from an airline, owning age old fleet, old stubborn crew & a bad management. Fortunately the luck favored the passengers, what if it happened in that BKK-BOM flight when both the pilots were absent in the cockpit.

The cockpit door lock might not have seen any lubricant since leaving the factory. Thank God the co-pilot was not inside the other jam-locked restroom or taking a nap after putting the aircraft into an autopilot and giving the piloting to the stewards. Wonderful aviation news.
