Karnataka CM calls on PM; seeks more rice for state

New Delhi/Bangalore, May 16(IANS) : Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Thursday called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought additional quantity of rice from the central government to implement the subsidised rice scheme for the poor.

"It was a courtesy call, as Siddaramaiah is in the capital on his maiden visit after assuming office May 13. He discussed governance issues and sought the prime minister's advice in administering the state," an official in the chief minister's office told IANS in Bangalore.

Siddaramaiah, who is in New Delhi since Wednesday to meet the Congress high command and finalise names of his ministers, urged union Food and Distribution Minister K.V Thomas to release an additional 1.83 lakh tonnes of rice per month for distributing 30kg rice per month at Re.1 per kg to 87 lakh people coming in the below poverty line (BPL) category.

"The official in Bangalore said that the state government would require a total of 3.31 lakh tonnes of rice per month for distribution through the public distribution scheme (PDS), over the 1.48 lakh tonnes the Food Corporation of India (FCI) allots to the state every month.

Giving a break-up of the subsidised scheme for distribution to Thomas, the chief minister said as Karnataka was a decentralised procurement state, it would not be possible for the state to procure the additional quantity of rice on its own due to non-availability of the foodgrain in the state.

"Without the support of the Government of India, it would not be possible for the state government to implement the popular scheme," Siddaramaiah told Thomas.

The susbidised rice scheme was one of the promises the ruling party made in its election manifesto ahead of the state legislative assembly poll May 5.

Currently, the state food and civil supplies department distributes 32,913 tonnes of rice under the Antodaya Anna Yojana at Rs.3 per kg, 57,616 tonnes under the BPL category at Rs.5.65 per kg, and 57,663 tonnes under the APL (above poverty line) category at Rs.8.30 per kg.

Siddaramaiah also called on Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, and Small Enterprises and Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar.

He will return to Bangalore Friday after meeting party president Sonia Gandhi again and securing her approval to constitute the cabinet by Saturday.

Dear Sidhu, rather asking more rice to the state,my humble request concentrate on growing more rice especially to coastal destricts.
    1. fix support price for the rice.
    2. Govt has to supply machineries like tractors, tillers, and harvesting machines during season.
    3. Areas wise and growthwise subsidy should be given to farmer.
    4.Incentive for small farmers.
simple logic is that if you give Re.1.00 per kilo of rise it ultimately effect on the production noboody want to grow in any angle cost per kilo of rice is not Re.1.00. please concentrate on the issue and act.

Don't make more & more free givings. At least let it be buy one get one free. More free reduces the value of the gift as well as the giver and increses the wasteage. Every healthy person must & should earn his daily bread. Resources should be calculated, cultivated and spent accordingly. E.g. rainy season approching. Rain water harvesting shuold be done to provide water for different purposes.

It is really a good development to discuss the State priorites with P.M. and high command because their support is very importatnt when the state don't have much reserves and financial condition is also not encouraging because of mismanagment of earlier governments.Hope, the Central Government will be with the State Government to ensure good and successful Government. All the best.Thanq.

Simple, Bangalore, here we have to comment on "Karnataka CM Calls on PM seeks rice for state" not on my comment, i just gave my personal opinion, it was not an advice to CM Siddaramaih, but suggestion. I am Overseas citizen of India, have same rights just like any Indian citizens, i visit India every year, i do lot of charity work in India, as an India i do my little best for my native place, so as many Indians who live here. During past many years when i visited Bangalore, i had stood in the Que for CM's Jana Darshan (People meeting CM personally), then Ex CM SM Krishna was busy with (late Dr. Rajkumar kidnapping issue) so couldn't meet him, another time i was fortunate enough to meet Ex CM Kumaraswamy and handed over to him my issue about Shortage of water in Kankanady (suburb of M'lore) where i grow up- the complain was written by me in Kannada. But nothing was done. When i was living in India i voted for Congress. So please don't misunderstand my comment, being educated and knowledgeable doesn't real solve problems, but one has to be forword thinking and honest, and our politicians in India are not honest.
We citizens in Australia can meet our elected representative everyday, except parliament session, they listen to our views, ready to help us, that is why these countries are so progressive. Elections here are fare, just polling officers(who check voting ID card), no police or guards, people don't cheat, you vote for the candidate of your choice, and make sure he works for the people.
I am an Indian and proud to be an Indian, my suggestion for every voter in India, vote for the clean, decent, trust worthy candidate, and make sure he works for the people.
I wish our CM all the best, my sincere suggestion for him to work for all the Kannadigas, make Karnataka No 1 state again. The current UPA is not working for the people, it is filled with corruption & scam, that is the fact.
    Jain Hind, Jai Karnatka.

Right now there is no vacancy for an extra advisor to the CM. He has advisors with proper education, experience and knowledge and he himself is very knowledgeable.
One need not shout\scream from far away land, that too down under and ask our CM to do this, to do that.
If you are that good enough, please try advising the officials of the country you are staying in.
Whenever you come running back to India, you try your hand in the improvement of Karnataka.
By the way did you vote in this just concluded election?

    @Simple, Bangalore,
It doesn't make you more of an Indian just because you sit in Bangalore, than any others who live outside the country.

We NRIs who contribute almost USD.70 billion to our country (annually) through our talents, abilities and hard work living abroad have the responsibility and have a say in the day to day affairs of our country, and not to forget our own Karnataka, as said by Lexy Saldanha,M'Lore/Australia.

Is it necessary to vote in the election to voice one's opinion in the daily affairs of our country, which in my opinion is not up to the mark...??

Are our leaders accessible whenever we need them?

Do they take swift action in matters of emergency whenever we need them...?

While I respect the deserving Congress leaders who became MLAs, ministers etc., I would also ask the voters, constituents(including those who are not eligible to vote, such as students, elderly, or those were away from the polling station during election) who gave them the opportunity to serve them, should closely and seriously monitor their achievements based on their election promises.

You sound like as though you are giving a 100 percent mark to the new CM, and there is no need for him to learn from anyone, and anymore.

    Jai Hind.

Congratulations Mr. Siddaramaiah, being appointed as CM of Karnataka, finally you have made it, after a long time your ambition has been fulfilled.

You have to thank Mr. Yeddurappa for splitting BJP Votes, as well as 5 yrs of BJP miss rule, it is more of BJP bashing than Congress victory.
Now work for the people, don't indulge cheap politics like giving cheap rice, cheap liquor etc. The most important thing people need is Water, electricity, proper infrastructure etc. Concentrate on planning your cabinet first, give proper minister post to able, clean and people friendly MLA's. Your task is a tough one, you will face lot of hurdles in your 5yrs rule. So be prepared for the challenge.

No point in meeting Useless PM, who is only a puppet in Congress led UPA govt. His days are numbered, the Congress led UPA is full of corruption and scams, the voters of India will show them the same fate that people have shown BJP in Karnataka, the writing is on the wall- Congress led UPA won't come back to power after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, this is the fact, and they don't deserve it.

People of Karnataka had not elected congress for expecting good work from them. People know that all party are corrupted. Mr. Anna Azare wanted to implement an option while voting to reject all candidates who is not fit to serve our country. All party knows that if that option would be there, they will be kicked off from politics. Even though there are some good people who wish to fulfill peoples needs, but their party members wont allow them to do that. We voters are the main corrupt who is giving opportunity to corrupted politicians each 5 yrs to loot our country and our hard worked tax amount.
